Reviews Summary

Ma'am Saab garners high praise for its authentic and flavorful Pakistani cuisine, with the butter chicken and tasting menu being particular highlights. Diners also rave about the unique and vibrant atmosphere, enhanced by exceptional service. However, some reviews note that the cocktails can be hit-or-miss, and the restaurant can get quite noisy and is occasionally understaffed.

"Had the best time on my first visit to Ma’am Saab. The space is decorated beautifully. Dark, intimate and trendy. We did the chef’s tasting and so had quite a lot from the menu. All tasty, surprisingly while I was obsessed with the naan dipped in butter chicken the chicken wings they have here are my perfection standout. I had a great time with new friends and a part of that was the standout service from Jimmy. He has lovely energy and made sure we were taken care of. Wonderful dinner!"

Nicole Igloo

"The atmosphere is absolutely a vibe. Gorgeous decorations. Even the utensils are adorable.
Brittany was our server chefs kiss. Amazing service. Very knowledgeable and prompt.
The food was 10 stars. There is so much flavor in your mouth. Im still think about it.
Absolutely go."

Brook Chavis

"We loved our experience here. The food is just fantastic. We couldn't decide so we chose to do the chef's tasting menu and everything that came out was delicious. We got to try all the sauces, loads of different dishes, all so unique. It reminds me of Indian food, but different flavor profiles. The bar tender on duty was so kind and full of knowledge about the menu."

The Best New Restaurants in Charleston, South Carolina

Historically, Pakistani cuisine has not received the recognition it deserves, yet it offers a unique blend of Indian and Middle Eastern flavors,” says chef Maryam Ghaznavi, who opened Ma’am Saab on Meeting Street in 2023. Ghaznavi, who was born in Pakistan, raised in Saudi Arabia, and has lived in North America for 20 years, is attempting to change that with her luscious cooking. Some dishes are familiar, like butter chicken in a fragrant sauce of garam masala, cumin, and chili powder, while others, like the Taj-e-Sabzi (seasonal vegetables with aloo methi, rice, and paratha), will serve as a delicious education for diners.

With its deep purple lighting and projection screen showing footage from street life in Pakistan, Ma'am Saab has a vibe that feels like nothing else in Charleston. When it comes to food, go for the butter chicken with a silky golden curry and perfectly cooked tandoori thigh, and the qeema samosas filled with freshly ground lamb.

Malika - The Local Palate

While the city has its share of Indian eateries, from casual lunch buffets to trendy, upscale offerings, Ma’am Saab’s residency at Workshop was the first time much of the Holy City became acquainted with Pakistani food. Most akin to Northern Indian regional cuisine, the food of Pakistan is more meat-focused (though you won’t often find pork, as the country is majority Muslim). Dishes also emphasize aromatic spices like turmeric and cardamom more heavily than their Indian counterparts.

This Pakistani restaurant started out as a pop-up on Upper King Street in 2020, and finally got their own space this spring—there's an exposed brick interior with deep purple lighting and a large projection screen showing footage from street life in Pakistan. When it comes to food, the butter chicken is an absolute must, and you should add on the lollipop chicken and qeema samosas filled with freshly ground lamb. If it’s on the menu, end your meal with the cardamom and rice kheer.

New and old collide at Ma’am Saab, with exposed brick hinting at the venue’s previous life as Jestine’s Kitchen, a Southern restaurant that permanently closed in 2020 after 24 years. Those rustic walls are balanced by ornate light fixtures and an illuminated bar, which backs up against a projector streaming Pakistani city scenes. Vegetarian bites are plentiful at Ma’am Saab, including chickpea biryani and samosa chaat.

They have plenty of vegetarian options, but the samosa chaats followed by the butter paneer are my go-to. Ma’am Saab is a great downtown takeout option, and if you are local you should look into their supper club membership.

Another one of my favorite stops while enjoying Charleston’s best desserts is Jestine’s Kitchen. Jestine’s is actually a diner, but they make a delicious, traditional Southern dessert that can’t be missed. When you take your seat at Jestine’s the first thing you’ll want to order is a piece of the famous Cola Cake, which it’s been serving up since 1996!
