What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Melfi's is highly praised for its exceptional Italian cuisine, particularly its handmade pastas and signature spicy Caesar salad. Diners also rave about the sophisticated yet lively ambiance and expertly crafted cocktails, making it ideal for special occasions. While most reviews highlight the delicious food and great atmosphere, some guests have noted that service can occasionally be inconsistent or slow.
"My biggest regret about eating at Melfi’s was that I didn’t come in sooner. My husband and I were blown away by the food. The atmosphere was vibrant and upscale…Perfect for a date night or special occasion. The spicy ceasar was hands down the best ceasar salad we’ve had. The arancini was delicious, dirty martini well balanced, but the pasta was the star of the show. We got the bolognese and bucatini and couldn’t pick a favorite. My husband was ready to come back the next day. Thank you, Melfi’s!"

"I recently had the pleasure of dining at Melfi’s in Charleston, and it was truly an exceptional experience. The food was absolutely delicious — every dish was thoughtfully prepared and full of flavor. The cocktails were superb, perfectly crafted and balanced, adding an extra touch of elegance to the evening.
Beyond the food and drinks, the atmosphere was beautiful. The ambiance struck the perfect balance between classic and modern, creating a warm, welcoming setting that made the night feel special.
Melfi’s is a true gem in Charleston — I’ll definitely be returning!"

"Took my wife here for her birthday dinner; we had reservations at the bar. A note awaited our arrival in honor of her birthday along with a champagne toast. Nate and Bryce were fantastic. Nate is a true artisan with cocktails. Service was paced perfectly. We started with the Suppli, my wife had the Osso Bucco, which was decadent, and I had the Diavola pizza for our entrees. The espresso martini served as our desserts. The ambiance was delightful. Great experience and look forward to the next time—cheers and Bon Appétit!"

Restaurants in Charleston
The third entry in Brooks Reitz's geographically constrained restaurant empire (you can stand on Upper King Street and see all three venues at once), Melfi's is as evocative as the chophouse and oyster garage that preceded it. Styled after a quintessential Italian-American dining room, Melfi's mischievous streak darts through the shaken Negronis and ends with the restaurant's excellent Roman-style pies.

Named for the family who once ran a pharmacy in the same space, Melfi’s menu offers updated takes on Italian staples. The polished, old-school dining room is warm and buzzy, providing a welcome backdrop to get your carbs on. Slip into a leather booth and proceed to feast on house-made linguine tossed with pancetta or littleneck clams, or “Roman-ish” pizza, like the Mr. Wally, made with vodka sauce, Fresno peppers, sliced salami and meaty hen-of-the-woods mushrooms.

Melfi’s is one of three restaurants that Brooks Reitz and Tim Mink own on a short stretch of Upper King Street bookmarked by Congress and Sumter streets. I once wrote that the dimly lit, self-proclaimed “clubby” restaurant and its crunchy Roman-style pizzas were fit for a tuxedo. Complemented by an upscale setting and nuanced cocktail program — four equally enticing negroni selections — Melfi’s topping combinations are what make these pies so snazzy.

This rich, frothy cocktail is the perfect finale to an amazing Italian meal at Melfi’s. We prefer to have our espresso martinis with ACTUAL espresso (some places use espresso-flavored liquor or creamy liqueurs that can be too sweet) – and Melfi’s quality espresso helps make this martini one of the best in town. For a cozy-chic date night or girl’s night out, check out Melfi’s small buzzing Italian bistro, owned by the same owners as Leon’s Oyster Shop!. I looove their stratiatella toast appetizer (seriously, I order 2 every time). I will note that the service here could definitely be admittedly better, but I still go for that toast.
