Reviews Summary
Diners rave about The Obstinate Daughter for its inventive New American cuisine, particularly its unique pizzas and rich pasta dishes. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service contribute to a memorable dining experience, although some mention dishes can lean towards the saltier side.
"The OD is to die for, you absolutely must come here if you’re visiting.
We had the Local Lettuce Salad (which might have been the freshest salad I have eaten since we traveled to Greece).
We had the Just Peachy pizza - which was being a bit adventurous for me - but it was outstanding. The sweet and salty flavors mixed together so well.
We also got the Radiatore pasta - the bowl of pasta is huge (you can definitely share)! The pasta itself is so delicious, and fun shapes! It’s a melt in your mouth sort of pasta.
Our server was incredible - even though he was so busy, he was attentive to everything that we needed/wanted! The vibe of the restaurant is a coastal, cozy dream! I cannot say one bad thing about this place - 10/10 recommend!!!"
Kathryn McCarthy
"We had been in The Obstinate Daughter during our vacation This might be the best pizza we’ve had in a long time. The crust, the quality of the ingredients, and the balance of toppings were all spot-on — a true treat for the taste buds. The salads were incredibly fresh, and the servers were so friendly, helping us with our selections. We finished with a flourless chocolate cake for dessert, which we absolutely loved. We will definitely be coming back."
Gulsah P.
"WOW. Best meal I had while visiting Charleston. Our server was delightful and the experience was excellent! So welcoming. The food — my lord — perfect. Between 3 of us for lunch we shared the butter lettuce salad, the rigatoni, and the pizza. Everything was so incredibly fresh and delicious. Spectacular quality. A MUST VISIT!!"

Best Restaurants Outside of Charleston's Tourist Area
Chef Jacques Larson operates on the fringes, creating destination restaurants far off the Charleston peninsula, first with his Johns Island trattoria, Wild Olive, and now with this seafood-and-pizza-focused outpost on Sullivan’s Island. His signature ricotta gnocchi with short-rib ragù and horseradish gremolata sets tastebuds salivating and inspires frequent return drives to the beach, as do pizzas like “Old Danger,” featuring pancetta, black pepper, and a farm egg over melted mozzarella and parmesan. Weekend brunch is in especially high demand, but the well-designed, nautical-but-not-kitsch dining room and wraparound raw bar stay packed for lunch and dinner every day of the week.
Restaurants in Charleston
Known for the fine Italian cuisine he offers here on Sullivan's Island and a few bridges away at Wild Olive on Johns Island, talented Jacques Larson might be as known for his seafood, pasta, and pizza as he is for his affable, good-guy charm. At OD, choose from the excellent gnocchi, inventive pizzas, and spicy bucatini pasta, or dive into surprises like grilled octopus with white beans, collard flower kimchi, and scallops and squid fra diavolo. The music is vintage R&B, and the vibe is relaxed at the nautical-styled restaurant that manages to feel like a local spot that just happens to serve downtown-level fare.

This restaurant is only five minutes from the beach and serves everything from pizza and pasta to Lowcountry classics, along with a huge variety of wine and cocktails.

The seared swordfish “paella,” served with saffron rice, chorizo, mussels, scallops, and shrimp, is a crowd pleaser, and one of the most unique dishes on the menu. Pair it with a glass of wine or one of the Italian-inspired cocktails, and voila!

From wood-roasted clams to seasonal vegetables, the OD (as it’s affectionately called) is all about shareable French, Italian and Spanish plates. Start with oysters from the raw bar, a flatbread with butterbean puree, or Frogmore chowder with shrimp and sausage, then move on to a veal cutlet over creamy grits or the Capanelle made with seasonal fish, green olives, calabrian chili, and breadcrumbs. Then there’s the Obstinate Daughter, named in honor of the Revolutionary War defenders of nearby Fort Moultrie. After the Americans repelled the British fleet, a London political cartoonist portrayed the victors as “Miss Carolina Sullivan, one of the obstinate daughters of America, 1776.” Unique name, unique menu. At this Sullivan's Island eatery, you can choose from Geechie frites with salsa rosa, Frogmore chowder, roasted beets with ricotta cheese, pistachio, horseradish and pomegranate molasses, gnocchi alla Romana (semolina, marinara and Battery Park brie).

The Obstinate Daughter is named for the American victory in the Battle of Sullivan’s Island in 1776, where a British cartoonist illustrated the defenders of Charleston as “Miss Carolina Sulivan, one of the obstinate daughters of America”. Their website describes the place as a ‘Lowcountry Food Fort.” They have a wood-fired pizza oven as well as a raw bar and relationships with local fishermen and farms. It’s a large place on the second floor of frame house with a patio facing the street and a very small parking lot downstairs.

There’s plenty of great dining out on Charleston’s beach islands, and the Obstinate Daughter on Sullivan's is a fine example. Chef/owner Jacques Larson's eclectic blend of Lowcountry ingredients and European technique includes long-running favorites like Frogmore chowder brimming with shrimp and sausage and cool, savory shrimp rolls with Marsh Hen Mill “frites” (fried grits) on the side. At The Obstinate Daughter, executive chef Jacques Larson’s big, open kitchen has a plancha and a wood-fired oven, and he uses it to create a beguiling array of pizzas, pastas and small plates. Southern at heart, The Obstinate Daughter draws inspiration from France, Spain and Italy. Pizza isn’t, in my opinion, the main event at the Sullivan’s Island restaurant, but the wood-fired pies still stand out. I’ll never forget the first Old Danger pizza (pancetta, farm egg, scallion, white sauce, mozzarella, Parmesan, black pepper) I had during a 2018 brunch at The OD, even if the farro with Brussels sprouts shined just a little brighter.

Though open on Sullivan’s Island since 2014, this eclectic Southern restaurant with a Mediterranean twist grows more popular each year. The name references the island’s ‘obstinance’ during the Revolutionary War when American Patriots defending Fort Sullivan saved Charleston from British capture in 1776. The menu, devised by owner-chef Jacques Larson, changes seasonally with the ingredients sourced from Lowcountry farmers and fishermen.
A Weekend In Charleston, SC With Kids
Probably our favorite meal food-wise was across the bridge in Sullivan’s Island at a place called The Obstinate Daughter. A friend recommended this as a place with fantastic food where we could “dress up a bit”, so initially we wrote it off (none of us packed anything remotely dressy). But then we happened to drive by around 11am and saw several families eating on the patio in very casual attire, so we decided to have an early lunch.
