It’s a place we’ve been scared to lose with a recent building sale, but we’re comforted knowing it’s still here after more than 40 years. Must-order dish: Stroganoff ($19.75) with aged beef, mushrooms and rotini pasta served with red wine, shallots and sour cream sauce.

Alexander Michael’s is a delicious uptown tavern great for lunch or dinner. There’s no need to make a reservation, but since it’s a popular destination, I always carve out a few hours to wait if necessary, then eat a great meal without feeling rushed to make my next stop. I can’t resist the Cajun fries and Caribbean jerk chicken quesadillas for lunch.

Located in… you guessed it, an old house on west 9th street, I have never been disappointed. Alexander Michael’s is one of those iconic Charlotte restaurants that is off the beaten path (a bit) in the fourth ward. It is a safe bet you will get a really good meal.
