What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Kardinal Hall offers a vibrant beer garden experience with a surprisingly diverse menu that goes beyond typical German fare. While many praise the extensive beer selection, lively atmosphere, and dog-friendly patio, some find the food menu overwhelming and occasionally inconsistent, with specific dishes like poutine and bitterballen receiving mixed reviews.
"Fabulous beer hall with plenty of seating inside and out. They have a large projection tv which was great for watching sports."
MarivicB
"Hefeweizen was wonderful and beer selection good. The poutine was good, but there was not much gravy and what was on it was bland. I liked the mild cheese on it, though. The bitterballen had no gravy at all, really just rolled up pot roast, not a true bitterballen.
Seating was very uncomfortable."

"We had our rehearsal dinner & wedding welcome party for our guests at Kardinal Hall and it was amazing! We had the rehearsal dinner in the private back room and then rented out the patio for our welcome party.
Everything was beautiful and delicious and we received rave reviews from our guests. The Kardinal Hall staff was awesome to work with and made everything super easy for us. Chrissy was a superstar from start to finish - she was super helpful in the planning stages and was there for every part of the event making sure everything was perfect for us.
Would recommend for anyone looking to host an event!"

Dog Parks Charlottesville VA -
Other dog friendly activities include taking your dog to a winery like Keswick Vineyards that has a dog park steps away from the tasting area, taking your dog to a brewery like Kardinal Hall off of Preston (they have lots of room for social distance), walking trails in the city like Rivanna Trails that has miles of paths to enjoy or taking a drive to Shenandoah national park for hiking and of course the famous Charlottesville Downtown Mall. The downtown mall is a great spot for the dog who thinks he’s a human, grab a coffee, eat some lunch, take a stroll or discuss the latest movie with friends, all with your dog at your side.
Pet Friendly Restaurants & Cafes in Charlottesville, Virginia accepting Dogs, Cats and other Pets
That kind of says it all at this modern take on a beer hall and garden. Located in a repurposed and renovated former Coca-Cola warehouse and bottling plant, Kardinal Hall features two crushed oyster shell bocce courts and an enormous outdoor patio with a bar and grill, where you and your pooch are always welcome. Choose from any of the 24 beers, 2 wines (and more are available by the glass), 1 hard cider, and 1 kombucha they have on tap, or opt for one of their cocktails; we like Wheat in the Knees, with gin, lemon, and honey syrup, topped off with Weihenstephaner.

Homemade sausages and steins larger than your head, board games piled mile high on a bookcase tucked in the corner, a bocce ball court for those looking to be more active in their game choices, and arguably the most comprehensive beer list in the Charlottesville area. The atmosphere is overarchingly attractive to all—from bachelorette parties to toddlers teetering around the picnic benches and M.S. in Commerce students meeting up for a beer after a long week of group projects.
breweries — The Townsman Collection
While not a brewery, if you love beer, you simply cannot miss a visit to Kardinal Hall, a modern take on an Alpine-inspired beer hall & garden. Located in the historic art-deco Coca-Cola building built in 1939, the repurposed warehouse & bottling plant is situated in the Midtown area of Charlottesville, Virginia. Brothers Josh Hunt & John Woodriff were enthralled by other beer gardens they had visited in various U.S. cities & in Europe.

And if that’s still not working, Kardinal Hall is just up the block, with its biergarten inspired food, drink and ambiance. The former Coca-Cola bottling facility is a gorgeous art deco structure, which provides a comfortable, welcoming space where you can sit and relax for a while. The beer list is impressive, with a well-rounded variety of styles from local and regional breweries, as well as national and international brands.
Scattered history: The city's 74 historic properties piece together our past
One of the most recognizable landmarks in Charlottesville, the Coca-Cola bottling plant was built in 1939. The two-story red brick building was situated next to several houses, one of which was purchased in 1944 and used for 33 years as a home for employees. Coca-Cola opened its original Charlottesville production plant in 1926, on 10th Street, in a building that was recently redeveloped into the Tenth Street Warehouses.

Kardinal Hall is a always a popular spot for college students and locals alike to gather with friends and share a beer. But I was blown away by how beautifully it worked as a casual wedding venue!. The food was delicious, the staff helpful, and the guests LOVED the indoor/outdoor environment, the lawn games, and the refreshments.
My Fave Casual Sit Down Restaurants in Charlottesville, VA
It’s popular for group gatherings and it is both kid and dog friendly, so I wouldn’t recommend this for the more introverted food crowd. However, it’s a fun spot with a large drink menu and a surprisingly elevated food menu given it is a German beer hall. Located on Preston Avenue, it’s off of a busy street close to downtown.

A Charlottesville Bar Review
All of us spend plenty of time at Kardinal Hall—it’s the unofficial Law School bar at this point. But if you are in the neighborhood, make sure to check out Random Row next door. It’s a much smaller spot, but with a few craft beers and an outside area, it is a bar worth enjoying, at least while it isn’t snowing.
