The downtown mall is a great spot for the dog who thinks he’s a human, grab a coffee, eat some lunch, take a stroll or discuss the latest movie with friends, all with your dog at your side.

Homemade sausages and steins larger than your head, board games piled mile high on a bookcase tucked in the corner, a bocce ball court for those looking to be more active in their game choices, and arguably the most comprehensive beer list in the Charlottesville area. The atmosphere is overarchingly attractive to all—from bachelorette parties to toddlers teetering around the picnic benches and M.S. in Commerce students meeting up for a beer after a long week of group projects.

While not a brewery, if you love beer, you simply cannot miss a visit to Kardinal Hall, a modern take on an Alpine-inspired beer hall & garden. Located in the historic art-deco Coca-Cola building built in 1939, the repurposed warehouse & bottling plant is situated in the Midtown area of Charlottesville, Virginia. Brothers Josh Hunt & John Woodriff were enthralled by other beer gardens they had visited in various U.S. cities & in Europe.

And if that’s still not working, Kardinal Hall is just up the block, with its biergarten inspired food, drink and ambiance. The former Coca-Cola bottling facility is a gorgeous art deco structure, which provides a comfortable, welcoming space where you can sit and relax for a while. The beer list is impressive, with a well-rounded variety of styles from local and regional breweries, as well as national and international brands.

One of the most recognizable landmarks in Charlottesville, the Coca-Cola bottling plant was built in 1939. The two-story red brick building was situated next to several houses, one of which was purchased in 1944 and used for 33 years as a home for employees. Coca-Cola opened its original Charlottesville production plant in 1926, on 10th Street, in a building that was recently redeveloped into the Tenth Street Warehouses.

Kardinal Hall is a always a popular spot for college students and locals alike to gather with friends and share a beer. But I was blown away by how beautifully it worked as a casual wedding venue!. The food was delicious, the staff helpful, and the guests LOVED the indoor/outdoor environment, the lawn games, and the refreshments.

It’s popular for group gatherings and it is both kid and dog friendly, so I wouldn’t recommend this for the more introverted food crowd. However, it’s a fun spot with a large drink menu and a surprisingly elevated food menu given it is a German beer hall. Located on Preston Avenue, it’s off of a busy street close to downtown.

Kardinal Hall isn’t a brewery, but is worth a mention for its curated selection of local and regional beers. This beer hall features an extensive menu of drafts alongside hearty food options like pretzels and sausages. The casual vibe and spacious interior make it a great place to try new beers and enjoy time with friends.

All of us spend plenty of time at Kardinal Hall—it’s the unofficial Law School bar at this point. But if you are in the neighborhood, make sure to check out Random Row next door. It’s a much smaller spot, but with a few craft beers and an outside area, it is a bar worth enjoying, at least while it isn’t snowing.

Kardinal Hall (722 Preston Avenue) - This spot will always be special to me as it's where my going away party was before I moved to Virginia Beach!. They have a large beer menu (and lots of other drink options as well), and a decent sized menu. I recommend their soft pretzels and the mac n cheese!

The closest you’ll get to Oktoberfest in Cville, this beer hall has an outdoor biergarten that will make you feel like you’re back in Germany. Ok, maybe not, but they do serve authentic German and Belgian beers, as well as local ones. They also have the best brats in town.

Kardinal Hall’s indoor/outdoor beer garden is an ideal spot for a low-key social. Take their outdoor event space for larger mixers and enjoy sunshine, bocce, homemade sausages, and a space roomy enough for social distancing. Oh, and did we mention an unrivaled beer list?
