Reviews Summary

Margie's Candies is a beloved Chicago institution renowned for its nostalgic atmosphere and incredibly generous, delicious ice cream sundaes. While the portions are massive and the homemade toppings are a highlight, be prepared for potential long waits during peak times. The vintage decor and friendly service contribute to a memorable, old-fashioned ice cream parlor experience.

"Do you like ice cream along with your hot fudge? How about a gravy boat full of warm marshmallow fluff? The this is the place.
Come here if you enjoy ice cream sundaes as a meal, not as a dessert.
Us 2 got our own dishes to serve as lunch. Mine was the classic turtle where caramel is poured on the ice cream before serving. On the side a boat of hot fudge, made fresh on site. Pour it all on and enjoy.
My daughter's boat had hot fudge mixed with marshmallow fluff, which is as decadent and delicious as it sounds, truly a heavenly match.
Both sundaes came with a small cup of peanuts to top off with.
And when your done with the main course, you get a surprisingly crispy and flavorful wafer cookie.

Sure, this place isn't cheap, but it's a great experience."

"I am a FROST… and ice cream is our thing. Before Chicago became a foodie town, there were simple joys like Margie’s. Homemade ice cream sundaes served in fancy shell, albeit plastic dishes, in a tiny, nostalgic spot. The scoops are huge, the ice cream is delicious, and the charm is timeless. 🍦🍦Also…the personal juke boxes at the booths are so cool! 😎"

"They offer a vast selection of ice cream flavours. Generous portion. We tried Brownie Ala Mode and Margie’s Harmony.

Margie's offers a trip back in time, with its vintage decor"

Best Ice Cream Shops in Chicago: Where to Find the Best Ice Cream

BucktownFounded in 1921, the original Margie’s Candies comes with tales of visitors like the Beatles and Al Capone (we also named it one of the best ice cream shops in America.) This Bucktown staple has maintained the old-fashioned decor and vibes, as well as a knack for serving handmade confectionery candy, chocolate, and fudge. On the ice cream side, you can go for classic scoops or make room for any of the shop’s famous banana splits. Bring a group for “the world’s largest terrapin,” a gargantuan indulgence featuring 15 scoops of French vanilla ice cream topped with a deluge of hot fudge, caramel, whipped cream, nuts, and banana before being crowned with a cookie. How to book: Stop by for first come, first served seating.

26 Best Ice Cream Shops in Chicago for a Frozen Treat

It’s nostalgia that draws people in droves to this kitschy diner and ice-cream parlor. Fancy silver trays, paper doilies and saucers filled with chocolate and caramel sauces bring back fond memories for many who’ve made this place a tradition since it opened in 1921. Equally reminiscent of the good old days are the display shelves, which are crowded with memorabilia from the Beatles, who just had to have some Margie’s ice cream after they played at Comiskey.

Where to Find the Best Ice Cream in Chicago

When it comes to vintage ice cream nostalgia in Chicago, it doesn't get any better than Margie's Candies. Any ice cream parlor that cites The Beatles as one-time customers is bound to be fantastic, especially when said parlor looks like it hasn't been refurbished since the Fab Four broke up in 1970. The best backdrop for wheel barrel-sized sundaes and splits is an ice cream shop lined with squishy booths, antiquated music machines, and a time-worn candy counter.
