Owner Billy Lawless and chef Chris Gawronski nailed the gastropub with this Mag Mile hit. Pollack describes it as "a casual, happy gastropub" which features "spicy mussels and prime burgers.". Because of its proximity to Millennium Park, "by all logic, it should be touristy, but it's a favorite among locals who work downtown," Kramer says. One word of warning: Pollack reports that the place "attracts scads of tourists in the summer," so be sure to request a table in the back, where it's a bit quieter.

To throw a few more options out there, other places seating past 11 pm include Aigre Doux for contemporary new American (read my eGullet review here), Hugo's for seafood, Smith and Wollensky for steak, The Gage for a gastropub-type place, and Venus for Greek, in Greek Town. All of these places are a short cab ride from Union Park and from your hotel (the Gage is only 3/4 mile from the hotel, which is walkable).

The eternal boomlet of new Chicago restaurants doesn't seem to affect intrepid, unpretentious eateries with consistently great food - like The Gage. Any day of the week, locals and tourists linger at the comfortable bar chatting and sipping "Historical Cocktails." The Queen of England would approve of the The Gage's G & T, a spot-on refresher. Whiskey fans won't be disappointed with the list here, either.

There was a nominal $4 pp booking fee and the start time was confusing on the website (they need to be more careful.) Fortunately, George sent an email in advance which clarified the meeting time. The tour was through the Pedway, which in itself is no big deal, but much appreciated in the cold weather. We finally got to see the insides of some the buildings!.

The Gage derived its name from the Gage band of buildings (1824 South Michigan). Built from the 1800s is now a legendary landmark.
