Reviews Summary

Topolobampo is celebrated for its masterful and innovative Mexican cuisine, with many praising the unique mole pairings and exquisite dishes. However, some diners have found the dishes to be excessively salty or have experienced stomach issues, leading to disappointment given the upscale price point. Service is generally noted as attentive and knowledgeable, contributing to an elegant yet enjoyable ambiance.

""Oaxaca: The Story of Seven Moles" was a delightful introduction to the Mexican sauce and its variety of flavours. Every dish was exquisite in its own way, and the food-mole pairing was very well done. The wait staff were also patient in explaining each dish, though it was hard to catch as the accent was thick at times, but I see that as a sign of authenticity."

"4.6 / 5.0 Great experience overall. Part of 3 restaurants in the building all owned by famed Chef Rick Bayless (including Frontera). The menu, operation and food blends very well together for a fantastic and authentic Mexican-American experience.

Ambiance was elegant but fun and just intimate enough. Drinks are made at a small private bar at the front entrance. Fresh margaritas, tequilas and more. Staff were pleasant and very responsive.

The star was the food. The abuse bouche round at the beginning was stunning. Caviar oysters, mini empanada and an electric mini soup (could have drank it from a gallon tank).

There were 6 rounds in the fixed Mercado de la Merced menu. All good, but the standouts were the Wild Mushroom with Morels, Chicharron Pork Belly (with great blue corn taco shells), a Mole - Hen entree (we added the foie gras option), and the Cheese Ricotta finished us strong.

Would go back yearly (bi-yearly) since they change the menu frequently. It’s also located in a great part of Chicago, River North that is a great place to be.

Overall great place to dine."

"This restaurant was the meal we were most looking forward to in Chicago, but it turned out to be the most shocking one. If you are unfamiliar with Mexican culture and are thinking about trying something new, think twice!

Every dish was extremely salty, and the tortillas had a strong fermented taste. One of the dishes included beef bone marrow, which was incredibly greasy and nauseating. The dessert, a pineapple and apple wrap, had such intense spices that it destroyed my sanity.

The five of us spent nearly $2,000, which I personally think was not worth it given the quality and ingredients of the food. The only redeeming feature was the upgraded wine list, which was quite good."

Topolobampo ("Topolo" for short) is the most sophisticated and upscale of Rick Bayless's restaurants. As with all of Bayless's restaurants, the products used here are local and seasonal. So whether you're eating from the marisquera (sustainable seafood bar) or choosing one of the platillos fuertes (usually a protein—hen, lamb, lobster—dressed in a complex, chili-based sauce), you know you're eating the best the season has to offer.

These are Chicago’s essential Mexican restaurants

Enyart, who was chef de cuisine at Frontera Grill and Topolobampo for 19 years (most of them as executive chef), and Jones Enyart, Topolo and Frontera’s award-winning pastry chef, opened a Logan Square restaurant that takes the Frontera/Topolo conversation in new directions. The two have created a very personal slate of Mexican-inspired dishes; early menus combined sea urchin with tomatillo and chicharron-infused cream, and reimagined carnitas as part of a Mexican-Polish mashup with buttered potatoes and caraway-laced sauerkraut. On the sweet side, there is banana-leaf ice cream, perhaps carrot flan and a chocolate cake the whole city raves about.
