Reviews Summary
Cafe Mochiko garners praise for its innovative Asian-American pastries and its unique Cincinnati-style ramen, drawing crowds who appreciate the creative fusion and cozy atmosphere. While many rave about the pastries and ramen, some diners have found certain dishes to be lacking in flavor or not meeting high expectations. The popularity of the bakery items means they often sell out early.
"Got the best ramen of my life here.
Then came back and got some awesome sweets the next morning . The croissant looked the best but honestly the cookies and shokupan were the stand outs in flavor.
Definitely need to come back if I’m ever in the area!"

"As a fan of authentic Japanese cuisine, I was genuinely surprised by the creativity at this place! Every dish had a familiar foundation with a subtle, delightful twist that made it stand out. Everything I tried was spot-on. I’ve heard great things about their bakery too, but since we went in the evening, most of the baked goods were already sold out—definitely going back earlier next time!"

"Where do I start! You can’t go wrong with anything you order here. My husband and I stop in almost weekly whether it be for pastries or dinner. The rotating ramens keep you coming back! If you wake up early on the weekend run and get a box of pastries before sellout. The hardest part is not ordering one of everything everytime you go. My husband who loves ramen orders the burger every-time we come in. He claims it’s the best in town! I always get the ramen, so we share plates. Staff is always a pleasure, the ambiance is exactly what you want out of a ramen shop, you will spend the rest of your life comparing other ramens to this ramen. I wish they offered carry out dinner as I am a take-away girly, but if we’re doing date night and I’m leaving the house for dinner this is where we’re going! Oh.. don’t forget the Shokupan!!"

Luckily, Cafe Mochiko offers those familiar flavors in a new way. It’s owned and operated by chefs Erik Bentz and Elaine Townsend, who have made an exceptionally good name for themselves in the culinary world, being highly revered by foodies across the nation (Townsend was featured in a 2021 issue of Bon Appétit and was also named a semifinalist for Outstanding Baker in the 2022 James Beard Awards). Bentz pays homage to the Queen City’s chili fixation with Cincinnati-style ramen — a Cincy-chili-flavored broth filled with minced and spiced meat, housemade noodles, diced raw white onion, tamago (marinated egg) and thinly shredded cheddar.
Celebrate Filipino American History Month at These Cincinnati Spots
While technically a “Japanese joint”, Mochiko has definitely been inspired by co-owner and James Beard nominated chef Elaine Uykimpang Bentz’s Filipino heritage. The bestseller is an ube hayala croissant, Elaine’s favorite item is the sweet corn bibingka, and for this month only to celebrate FAHM, she’s making carioca coconut mochi donuts, inspired by the Filipino fried sweet rice street food, carioca. The café was also recently featured on Food & Wine magazine Restaurant Editor Khushbu Shah’s list of best bites of 2022 for its Cincinnati Chili Ramen.

The Best Cincinnati Chili in Cincinnati
A cute Asian American bakery-café full of houseplants and Japanese art may be the last place one expects to find Cincinnati chili. But Cafe Mochiko in the city’s East Walnut Hills neighborhood often serves its own version of the dish: a Cincinnati-style ramen. Chef Erik Bentz, who co-owns the cafe with his wife, the James Beard Award–nominated pastry chef Elaine Uykimpang Bentz, says the development of their chili ramen took root during the start of the pandemic.
