The final stop of our tour of international cuisine in Northern Kentucky is located “across the pond.” The kitchen at Pompilio’s in Newport has been turning out lasagna and other red-sauce classics since 1933. Just 10 minutes away in Highland Heights is Servatii’s, which, despite its Italian-sounding name, is a German bakery that has supplied residents with giant pretzels for six decades. Additionally, for two decades, the Hofbräuhaus Brewery & Restaurant has been serving the best wursts in Newport and its own German-style beers.

600 Washington Ave., NewportOpen since 1933, Pompilios is locally beloved for its family-friendly Italian fare and appearance in several motion pictures, including that toothpick scene in Rain Man and '90s Rollerblading film Airborne. Founder Colonel Pompilio was also the first to secure a liquor license in Kentucky after Prohibition ended, so they have a surprisingly extensive bourbon list. The menu is classic red-sauce Italian with dishes like homemade lasagna, manicotti and veal.

They valued that “name recognition (and probably location) carries a lot of weight.” The Gosneys reflected that “the two iconic Newport restaurants are Pompilio’s and the Green Derby and everybody knows them, and they’ve been around forever.” That mattered to them. In a cryptic conclusion to the interview, the Gosneys described themselves as “a couple of geeks .

I love the charm and history of Pompilios located in Newport, KY—It’s been around since 1933 after all. Pompilios is an old family favorite, it’s also where the toothpick scene is Rain Man was filmed!. We used to go there every year around Christmas until our service was bad one night and three meals came out LONG after the others.

Perhaps our most famous local film-shoot location, Pompilio's appeared in the 1988 film “Rain Man,” which starred Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. “They were both very nice. Dustin Hoffman was absolutely friendly and cordial and would sit around and have conversations with us during their breaks,” former owner Frank Mazzei said.

Serving up spaghetti since 1933, Pompilios Restaurant in Newport, Kentucky is a mainstay. Feasting on a memorable meal at Pompilios is one of the top Newport, KY things to do!. In a small corner section of the menu labeled specialty sandwiches, the Pomp Burger is listed, served with fries. It's the perfect option for a diner that is avoiding pasta for whatever reason.

Truth be told, we would go to Pompilios even if the food sucked simply because it is a place that’s special to our family. Actually, this place isn’t just special to our family, but hundreds of other local families who have been eating at Pompilios for generations!. Fortunately, the food doesn’t suck!

Pompilios has been dishing out authentic Italian food since 1933. Their Italian sauces are actually so good they started selling them in stores!. You can find their sauces at Fresh Thyme, Jungle Jim’s International Market, Kroger, and Whole Foods!

Pompilios – Located in Newport, this Italian restaurant and full bar has both indoor and outdoor seating and may look familiar…the movie Rain Man was shot on site (it is the restaurant in the movie where Dustin Hoffman counts the toothpicks).

Old world quality of cuisine and service which are not often seen these days. Everything was delicious and brought out quickly. That said, the noodles on the cannelloni were more al dente than desired, and lacked sauce inside.

There are some good shots in NKY, Eden Park, West High, Longworth Hall, Pompilios, and others. It is on Youtube in sections if anyone wants to watch it.

For a more mellow evening, start with dinner at Pompilio’s , then stroll across the pedestrian-only Purple People Bridge to enjoy the views.
