Tucked away among the brownstones of Victorian Village is Basi Italia. Head chef John Dornback specializes in Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, serving up hot and cold antipasti and a selection of pasta, fish, and meat dishes. The ‘Zucchini Pronto’ is savory and freshly made, with pecorino cheese and toasted almonds.

Nestled in the heart of Victorian Village, Basi Italia is a small and intimate restaurant offering simple Italian fare with innovative twists. Specializing in Italian and Mediterranean inspired food, the family-friendly restaurant features a cozy dining room and a charming terrace where diners can enjoy weekly wine tastings known as Vino on the Veranda. The seasonal menu boasts Northern Italian favorites such as homemade pasta and sauces, wood-fired pizzas, prime meat, chicken and veal dishes, and freshly prepared salads with locally sourced ingredients and regional produce.

And visitors, locals and experts say you can't leave Columbus without sampling some of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams. I’ve never thought of Italian food as my go-to for dining out, but that would totally change if I lived near Basi Italia. I loved everything about this place, from the food, to the atmosphere, to the hospitality. The owner was so genial and passionate about our experience at the restaurant, I think all of us really felt like guests, and from chatting with locals, that seems to be the norm here.

Basi Italia (811 Highland St.; Basi-Italia.com) is an undisputed jewel, and Rockmill Tavern (503 S. Front St.; RockmillTavern.com) will almost make you want to stay in Columbus permanently. Also, stop by The Land-Grant Brewing Company (424 W. Town St.; www.LandGrantBrewing.com), a taproom/brewery that is surrounded by pennants from land-grant universities (in alphabetical order).

It might be a little tricky to find Basi Italia if you’re not familiar with the Short North icon. It’s located on a street that looks more like an alley, and they have never been ones for lots of public announcement. But if you do seek out the secluded spot, you’ll be happy you did, as Basi easily has one of the most beautiful, mellow patios in the city.

A meal at Basi Italia feels like a dinner with an Italian grandmother’s huge extended family, and with only 38 seats, intimacy is guaranteed. A shady patio and outside bar gives seating for 66 more patrons in the warmer months. Owners John Dornback and Trish Gentile have been creating Italian and Mediterranean-inspired cuisine since 2003.

Basi Italia is a small and cozy casual restaurant that is open for dinner Wednesday-Saturday. The restaurant serves clean Italian fare, and its menu includes a mix of specials, insalata, primo, Basi classico, carne, pesce, contorni, and dolce. Available primo include a forest mushroom flatbread, pizza margarita, and pizza neapolitano.

Basi Italia (811 Highland St) – In Columbus’ Victorian Village, Basi cooks up Italian and Mediterranean fare based on locally grown produce, so the menu changes seasonally. Their outdoor terrace is the perfect spot on a warm summer night, and if you visit on a Wednesday, you may catch “Vino on the Veranda” a weekly wine tasting event.

There are so many more Italian restaurants to talk about such as Spagio, Basi Italia… but I’ll have to wait for another blog entry. Basi-Italia – during our last night in Columbus, we had dinner at Basi-Italia, one of the most popular Italian restaurants in Columbus. The combination indoor/outdoor restaurant was so charming and intimate and the food was fantastic!. Some of the best classic Italian food that I’ve had out in a long time.

A little advertised but well known restaurant, Basi Italia provides great food and a wonderfully romantic atmosphere. Basi complements their excellent Italian cuisine with a comfortable, unique setting. The restaurant is in an old Victorian house with a patio in the backyard.

**Basi’s cocktail menu is small but seductive, especially in the summer when you can sit out on the patio and enjoy a few drinks after dinner. It’s not just all summer fun though. This fall Basi stole my heart with an apple cider and whisky cocktail called Sidro Italiano.

In a city that’s located so far from Italy, you’d think Italian restaurants would be scarce. Turns out, Basi Italia is yet another great place to enjoy bruschetta and risotto. This place is trendy and you’ll love the cute atmosphere.

A New York-trained chef brings his skills to a house in the heart of Victorian Village, serving creations such as creamy sweet crab and corn risotto.

The patio is insanely amazing and the food shocks me every time with how unique it is. We often celebrate our birthdays at Basi---it's that good.
