Filled with greenery, the stark-white dining room at Comune feels straight out of a Scandinavian design catalog. It’s always a solid choice for a date night, and the plant-based menu is a pretty big departure from traditionally meat-heavy Midwestern restaurants. Dishes are always rotating in and out, but expect things like sunchoke bisque drizzled over cabbage, breaded lion's mane mushroom , or a ten-layer lasagna packed with mushroom bolognese.

Co-owners Joe Galati and Brook Maikut opened Comune hoping to create an establishment where like-minded individuals can come together to enjoy vegetarian cuisine, or “plant forward” food as they like to put it. On the restaurant’s highly philosophical website, Galati and Maikut talk about “the power of food to connect us to each other … and to the world.” But it’s flavor and not philosophy that’s usually on patrons’ minds as they dig into the huge plates of mouth-watering food made from seasonal ingredients like a roasted root sandwich, sweet potato torta, or Pantry Love: a collection of pickled vegetables. Even the simple Bread and Spread is far from simple, with its fermented dough baked into a Naan-like consistency.

Rounding out other can’t-miss evening spots are Chapman's Eat Market by semifinalist for the 2023 James Beard Award for Best Chef in the Great Lakes region, BJ Lieberman—guests can’t get enough of the sticky-sweet General Tso's Cauliflower and Khao soi—and Comune, where hearty, plant-based plates (carrot cassoulet, mushroom bourguignon) take center stage. The historic Open Air School has been transformed into a day-to-night destination with Emmett’s Cafe and Understory, a lounge and event space by the folks behind Wolf’s Ridge Brewery. For an elegant nightcap, head down to Lieberman’s Ginger Rabbit, a swanky, subterranean cocktail den with live jazz.

The menu changes seasonally at Comune, but one thing remains constant: It’s among the most stylish, creative and sophisticated restaurants in Columbus bar none. Chef Matt Harper’s experience at Southern all-star Empire State South in Atlanta (owned by James Beard Award-winning chef Hugh Acheson) and Zahav, an elite Israeli/Middle Eastern restaurant in Philadelphia (a “Best Restaurant in the Country” James Beard Award-winner) are evident in Harper’s innovative and wildly eclectic (if Mediterranean-informed) vegetarian dishes. Since November 2018, Comune’s co-owners Joe Galati and Brook Maikut have been focused on making their plant-forward cuisine more enticing at their restaurant in Schumacher Place. Both vegetarians, the two had traveled a lot to major cities, including Copenhagen, Berlin, Los Angeles, and New York City, and found many restaurants to choose from. Yet back home, and before opening Comune, there were not many similar dining options around Columbus.

This was my first meal in Columbus and I think I have to claim it as my favorite as well. We ordered a little bit of everything – bread and spread, crispy rice, tempura cauliflower, and togarashi fries – and I couldn’t stop eating. Comune is a newer spot with a minimalistic open space with dishes meant to be shared so as to connect, or comune, with one another, the community, and the world.

This gorgeous restaurant located near the beautiful German Village had the most beautiful interiors and dishes of course!. Comune offers a flavorful, plant forward cuisine made from seasonal ingredients. I loved the open, plant filled space and the stunning bar was such an amazing focal point of the restaurant.
