Hey Columbus Foodies! Had the best lunch with fifth-generation owner Matt Schmidt at Schmidt’s Restaurant Sausage Haus in German Village, and I’m still thinking about all the flavors. Reviews Summary

Schmidt's Sausage Haus is celebrated for its authentic German cuisine, lively atmosphere with oompah music, and friendly service. Diners rave about signature dishes like the Bahama Mama and especially the legendary jumbo cream puffs. While the experience is overwhelmingly positive, some visitors note that long wait times can be a factor, particularly during peak hours.

"Excellent food, excellent service, excellent atmosphere and entertainment! I’ve been wanting to visit Schmidt’s for a long time and when I visited Columbus recently, we made this our first night’s stop. Not only was our meal great but we also really enjoyed the atmosphere along with the gentlemen playing the tuba and accordion. Although the main course was delicious, the cream puffs were out of this world. So glad we stopped here and will definitely be back!"

"⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I recently dined at Schmidt's Sausage Haus, and I must say, it was an outstanding experience! I tried the turkey Reuben, and it was absolutely delicious—perfectly seasoned and packed with flavor. The side of potato pancakes was phenomenal; they were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, truly a must-try!

The beer selection was impressive, and I opted for a German light that complemented my meal beautifully. To top off my visit, I took a cream puff to go, which was a delightful treat!

What really stood out was the fantastic interaction with the staff and fellow guests. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, making it a great place to enjoy a meal. I can't wait to return for another round of those amazing dishes! Highly recommend!"

"Schmidt's Sausage Haus was excellent as always. I don't often get to go to the main Columbus Restaurant that much (I've pretty much had them via Food Trucks whenever they're near where i live or at the Ohio State Fair) but since I was in town for the weekend, I know I had to come in and as usual, excellent food, excellent atmosphere and the staff was very friendly. Highly recommend their Currywurst and their famous Bahama Mama. And definitely order an extra serving of their Potato Salad if you can. It's definitely worth it. Would've gotten one of their cream puffs as well but I was too full. I can always go back before I leave Columbus and definitely will"

Cool Columbus: What to Do in the Midwest's Hippest City

Traces of German-American culture remain at spots such as Schmidt’s (240 E. Kossuth St.), a “sausage haus” with origins in a meatpacking business established in 1886, and Schiller Park, where a statue of German poet Friedrich Schiller stands. But since the neighborhood’s revitalization in the 1960s, numerous independent businesses have moved in as well, many with an artsy or culinary bent, such as the area’s coffee shops (more on those in a minute) and the Book Loft (631 S. 3rd St.), a literary labyrinth where you can lose yourself in 32 rooms of books for sale. And we mean that literally.

When you help run the largest festival in Dayton — (The Dayton Art Institute’s Oktoberfest happening Sept. 23-25), it’s very atypical to follow vendors to their place of business after the fact to order more food from them. I am in front of Schmidt’s all weekend long and the only alternative that makes more sense and provides more comfort is their 1886 German Village restaurant. If you get a chance, this German Village staple located south of downtown is one worth a visit to, if nothing else for the bevy of conversations you will have with friends and family after the fact.
