While we read the menu we ordered a couple of local microbrews — Tuckerman Pale Ale, made in Conway, and a smooth brown ale by Moat Mountain, located just down the road. We settled on the Friday night special fisherman’s platter and a half-pound sirloin burger with applewood- smoked bacon and Vermont cheddar cheese. Instead of ordering dessert, we adjourned to Spoons, the old-fashioned ice cream parlor downstairs, where we bought cones — how could we resist ice cream with a name like LL Bean Muddy Bean Boots?.

There are a lot of top-notch spots to stop in for a bite or a beverage along White Mountain Highway — however, Moat Mountain Smokehouse is one that can’t be missed. You’ll find a delicious menu awaits you, one that is full of dishes smoked on site like Texas-style brisket and Carolina-style pulled pork. There’s also pizza and burgers to choose from, as well as gluten-free and vegan options — so everyone can get their favorite things.

After surviving the unsettlingly steep drive up Hurricane Mountain Road, the hike starts from the Nature Conservancy's large parking lot in the flat mountain pass between Black Cap and Hurricane Mountain, where recent logging activity has pervaded the area. Follow the wide and level Black Cap Trail beyond trail signs into the woods. After dipping slightly, the trail ramps up its ascent of the mountain over more rocks and roots.

From the trailhead off West Side Road, head east along Moat Mountain Trail. This section of the trail is accessible all the way to the falls with several benches along the way. The trail is a fairly wide and flat, gravel and dirt path with no roots or rocks to contend with.

Since everyone has worked up an appetite, we then head to my favorite place to eat, The Moat. Don’t miss their beer sampler and nachos with mango chutney. They have outdoor seating and it’s so nice to sit out there on a sunny day.

We had heard people rave about their beer, pretzels, and burgers. Curiosity piqued, I even stumbled upon a scathing one-star review that criticized everything except the pretzel. Naturally, we had to sample it for ourselves.

The parking area for Diana's Baths also serves as the trailhead for hiking North Moat Mountain. A semi-loop over North Moat Mountain is 10.2 miles in length and is rated difficult.

Very gluten conscious, well-labeled, and staff is knowledgeable (all sauces are GF). The ribs were excellent (we housed a full rack). The Santa Fe nachos were amazing.
