Located inside Denver’s Union Station, Ultreia is a Spanish/Portuguese “gastroteka” that serves flavorful tapas and Portuguese petiscos. From the same group that brought you Rioja, Stoic & Genuine, Bistro Vendome, and Euclid Hall, Ultreia is one where the taste of the Iberian Peninsula collides together for unforgettable dishes. The intimate space is complete with an open kitchen and a spot at the bar where you can watch a four-year-old Jamon Iberico get carefully carved.

The newest endeavor by restaurant powerhouse Chef Jen Jasinski, Ultreia is located in the heart of Denver’s Union Station. With murals scaling the walls and an elegant staircase through the center of the intimate space, Ultreia offers diners a chance to taste some of the best small bites in the city in an upscale atmosphere. The menu is built around the Iberian peninsula and features tapas-style treats as well as full portions of Spanish and Portuguese dishes.

Union Station, Denver's transportation hub and an energy-infused hotspot for gathering, is a fine choice for lunch. It’s a good option for the visitors who are stopping off next on their travels in Spain, for example. But everyone should be content here with an oversized gin tonic in hand and some croquettes, pan con tomate or a jamón trio for tapas.

There’s a lot to love about hot and crispy potatoes, especially when it’s topped with Spanish-style chile crunch, tomato crema, and sunflower seeds. At the Barcelona-influenced restaurant Ultreia in Union Station, the $10.50 tapas is a great addition to any spread. You can boost the small plate with octopus ($9.50) or butifarra sausage ($7.25) to add some protein.

Ultreia serves the cousin of the tapa which are pintxos, similar small bites from the Basque region. The result is often a stack of deliciousness served on a toothpick. They serve Happy Hour from 3-6pm, Monday through Friday and it would be worth sneaking out of work a little earlier to try their delights like Pulpo a la Plancha or Chef Choice Pintxo Platter.

When the tapas concept opened at Union Station in 2017, the all-Spanish eatery had a format and menu items that were unfamiliar to many diners. “So what we did was create a feast as a way to combat that,” explains executive chef and now operating partner Adam Branz. “I remember telling the general manager at the time, ‘Let’s take the thinking out of it.’

Travelers might not expect to find a restaurant as refined as Ultreia in Denver’s historic union station. Drawing from Spanish and Portuguese cuisine, Ultreia serves food all day long. Tapas and pintxos include Iberian flavors like chorizo sausage, manchego cheese, and marinated octopus.

Let me start off by saying that Ultreia truly blew me away with their paella. The food at this place is simply unreal. Every bite was bursting with flavor and perfectly cooked.
