Across the street from Lake Superior, this café embraces the farm-to-table concept, organic wherever possible, including sourcing from herb and vegetable gardens on the property. Locals have been flocking to this cozy place, where work by local artists graces the wide-plank wooden walls, since its opening in the late 1990s. Starters like duck-confit spanikopita or curried blue mussels are perfect to share.

For a quick excursion from Downtown Duluth, take a drive along the lakeshore to the New Scenic Café. The seasonal menu manages to be simultaneously approachable and exotic, with influences including Indian, Japanese, Norwegian, French, and Italian cuisines. True to its name, it has a gorgeous flower and herb garden as well as local artists' works hanging on the walls.

Opened in 1999, the New Scenic Café is an intimate, contemporary American restaurant. Located on the scenic North Shore of Lake Superior, the café is surrounded by a charming garden of herbs, vegetables, and flowers. Inside, the atmosphere is equally welcoming with warm, wood-paneled walls decorated with local artwork.

For the most part, the New Scenic Café has been closed during the pandemic, but a food truck called Scenic 61 has been filling the void during the warmer months (along with a nifty meal-kit operation that owner Scott Graden started in spring 2020). The food truck is really an Airstream trailer that's moved from the New Scenic parking lot to Canal Park this past summer, next to the Garden Canal Park, formerly Grandma's Sports Garden. Some of the restaurant's menu items are served out of the trailer, like the classic lobster roll, the salmon burger with its unique black brioche bun and the bánh mi.

For diners willing to venture off the beaten path for a dining experience, the New Scenic Cafe, located between Duluth and Twin Harbors, can be fun destination for a night out. This restaurant boasts an expansive view of Lake Superior from across the highway, and diners can enjoy the scenery seated indoors or, when the weather is nice, on the outside lounge chairs within the herb and flower garden. The wood plank walls in the interior along with the local artwork and decor, give the cafe a northwoods feel with a touch of modern stylings.

Other tacos worth mentioning, gone or found only seasonally: Rest in peace to the wonderful tacos of the now-shuttered Martha’s Daughter, where chef Nyanyika Banda understood what a taco should be. New Scenic Cafe’s sashimi tuna taco isn’t always on the menu, but the crispy wontons wrappers filled with slashes of wasabi and jewel-toned tuna are a sure bet when they are. And the Rambler food truck’s entry of mahi mahi tacos — found May through October — are worth tracking the truck’s whereabouts every single week of the season.

New Scenic Cafe is, without a doubt, the best restaurant Duluth has to offer. I first visited this staple restaurant at 10, only to find that over a decade later, it was just as good as I remembered. The Scandinavian-inspired New American fine dining restaurant honors local ingredients, transforming them into sophisticated plates in a simple, homely space that, frankly, none of the other restaurants in Duluth begin to compete with.

It’s tiny – a reservation is a must if you don’t want to potentially wait hours for a table, and they are dedicated to a hygge, relaxed atmosphere. Here we indulged in a lobster roll, salmon, deviled eggs, and a smoked hummus plate with homemade naan that was incredible.

When we get a little extra time to make the drive up the shore without feeling like we have to rush home, this is our spot. We’ve never had a bad meal here and we’ve always been obsessed with everything we’ve tried. Nestled on Lake Superior with a menu that changes often, this spot is sure to please your palate and will introduce you to new foods you’ve never tried.

My first choice was the New Scenic Cafe, a little north of Duluth, which had been recommended on Twitter. But the evening before we left friends who go up to the North Shore every year said New Scenic was inconsistent and recommended that we get sandwiches instead at Northern Waters Smokehaus in Duluth. We went with that suggestion.

I was told ahead of time that this was a must and that it’s a little spendy, but I still wasn’t prepared for how spendy it was going to be. To really have a great experience I’d say expect to spend $$$.

Va Bene, New Scenic Cafe, Lake Avenue Cafe, OMC, Zen House, The Anchor, Big Daddy’s Burgers, Thirsty Pagan Pizza. These are my favorites and they are all over the place as far as styles and shit. Anchor and Thirsty Pagan are in Superior too.
