Mateo Bar de Tapas is celebrated for its innovative Spanish-Southern fusion cuisine and vibrant atmosphere, making it a top spot in Durham. Diners rave about the unique flavor combinations and the lively ambiance, though some mention occasional issues with service speed and noise levels. Despite minor complaints, the overall experience is highly recommended for its culinary creativity and energetic vibe.
"OMG seriously.... The food here was Ahhhhmmaaazzzinngggg!!! Our waitress Kate was so awesome. The vibes were so chill and I love the fact that you could order so much and share and just in case you didn't like it, it was small, but I loved everything I ordered!! Again, if my stomach had more room, I would have had so much more, but it gives me a reason to come back again and again to hopefully try the whole menu. The prices were reasonable too. So awesome!! Chefs kiss 😘"

"Great laidback atmosphere with the menu being mostly small plates. There are a couple larger plates for 3+ people to share as well. Can be a little loud due to high ceilings but over all a great place to share a meal with friends or a date.
Flavors are all well balanced and the service was great!"

"This is my third time, and my wife’s and my second time in the last year. Fantastic restaurant with a great atmosphere, and so many delicious options. Today we celebrated our seventh anniversary, and our waiter even threw in a little something special, which we really appreciated!
While we didn’t get it this time, I think the best dessert is the apple pie. We also really liked the pork belly, but you really can’t go wrong with anything… Except for the chicken croquettes, that one we did not like ha."

Which is why it should come as no surprise that the city is home to Copa, a Latin restaurant run by a Cuban biochemist, and Mateo, described by Alton Brown as “the best tapas bar in the U.S.” It’s also the home of two tentpole cultural events that sell out in a flash: April’s Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, which draws top filmmakers from around the world, and Moogfest, an avant-garde music, art, and tech gathering held the same month. Expectations were high when Matt Kelly, executive chef of Durham’s Vin Rouge, opened Mateo Bar de Tapas in 2012. Since then, food enthusiasts have lined up for tables at this vibrant eatery for such authentic Spanish tapas as tortilla española, patatas bravas and pan con tomate. Sweetbreads topped with a sauce of the season are on the menu, as are blood sausage, the finest Spanish hams and cheeses, and varying seafood small plates, like charred octopus with black garlic aïoli and fried squid with piquillo pepper tartar sauce.

Mateo’s menu has an enormous selection of inventive Spanish-style tapas—everything from chicken liver pate to cold crispy pork skin, blood sausage spring rolls to bone marrow and smoked oxtail marmalade, shrimp and pork meatballs to the locally famous patatas bravas.
