This Neopolitan pizzeria is one of the most bustlely spots in town, with a menu of red and white pizzas and even a selection of hams. A large communal table means you may bump into new friends. There’s a house made Shan-Xi noodle dish with two variations, one pairing the broad, very long wheat noodles with an animal protein such as stir-fried pork belly or braised monkfish, and the other a vegetarian alternative at Rose’s Noodles, Dumplings & Sweets.

Something else I love, aside from wine, is pizza, and one of the best places to combine the two is at Pizzeria Toro. Their wood-fired pies pair perfectly with a well-edited list of Italian wines that span the length of the country from North to South. I prefer Northern Italian whites like a Malvasia from the Veneto, but they’ve also got full-bodied reds from Southern Italy if you like something robust to stand up to your pizza.

Pizzeria Toro is an amazing pizza place in downtown Durham, and while I did not have an abundance of pizza in Durham, I can safely say this pizza is at least in the top 3, if not number 1, in Durham. I got the pepperoni because you can never go wrong with it, and you can see my picture of it in the slideshow above. If my recount of this pizza does not prove its deliciousness, that picture should be.

We switched to a pizza theme at our next stop, Pizzeria Toro. They have a large open oven in the back of the main restaurant space, with stacks of wood at the ready. As with all the restaurants on this trip Pizzeria Toro is a small, neighborhood establishment with a good feeling and a single, open dining area.

Pizzeria Toro is as close as you'll get to eating pizza in Napoli, without the expensive airline ticket. This casual upscale restaurant will hit the spot for those who love pizza but want sophisticated flavors. The wood-fired pizzas are thin and crispy on the bottom, with a chewy, blistered crust.
