It's worth the line down the sidewalk for the house-made ice cream with seasonal flavors at this boutique spot with a dozen daily flavors.

The creamery, opened in 2011, houses rotating flavors inspired by both the seasons and the beloved food memories of owners Yoni Mazuz and Vanessa Mazuz – from classics like vanilla and cookies ‘n’ cream to Vietnamese coffee, plum lassi and summer corn with blueberry swirl – using dairy from Simply Natural Creamery in Ayden, North Carolina, and fresh fruit from local farms. Along with the shop’s original brick-and-mortar at 117 Market St., its second location, The Parlour Junior, is a mini scoop shop based out of The Common Market on the corner of Iredell and Green streets. This satellite venture features a smaller selection of scoops, shakes and toppings Tuesdays through Sundays (the downtown location also serves coffee drinks and homemade baked goods every day of the week).

Located in downtown Durham, The Parlour features seasonal scoops made with local dairy — don’t miss peach cardamom and corn blueberry — and a robust vegan selection, including a rotating soft-serve flavor. If you’re a texture person, check out Simons Says Dip This, starring Belgian chocolate-dipped flavors and whimsical toppings like Fruity Pebbles. Cool off at Pelican's SnoBalls with icy New Orleans-style sno-balls in flavors like tutti frutti and cherry cola, or head to La Monarca, a traditional paletería serving paletas con frutas, Mexican-style fruit popsicles.

The nearly six year-old Beer Study shares space with the Starpoint Brewing Company. “We have about 15 types of beer on tap from Starpoint and 40 total,” says manager Kerri Hoffman. “We have two wine drafts, two cider drafts, and a kombucha CBD.” And oh what a selection on tap: there are pilsners and IPAs, Hefeweizens and porters, amber ales, wheat ales, lagers, pale ales with jalapenos, stouts with coffee, milk stouts and fruited IPAs.

But no visit to Durham is complete without stopping in at the Parlour, which serves handmade, high-butterfat ice cream out of a little storefront on Market Street. Sourcing ingredients from nearby vendors like Carrboro Coffee Roasters and Lyon Farms, it scoops flavors like Vietnamese coffee, blueberry, toasted coconut, and geranium, earning nods from CNN and Marie Claire.

Next on our frozen treat adventure is a Durham favorite: The Parlour. Located in downtown Durham, The Parlour is renowned for its handmade ice cream, creative flavors, and nostalgic charm. From classics like chocolate and vanilla to innovative concoctions like lavender-vanilla bean and Vietnamese coffee, The Parlour’s menu is a paradise for ice cream lovers.

The Parlour was also a food truck once, but now it’s the best hand-made ice cream in Durham. The Parlour has delicious ice cream, creative flavors, plenty of vegan ice cream and baked good options, and super epic ice cream Sundays and floats. Centrally located downtown, this is the perfect choice after a Durham Bull’s game or a show at DPAC.

Dos Perros - With a dedicated fryer and rice flour in the kitchen, gluten-free and vegan diners can both rejoice over the Flautas Veganas: crispy corn tortillas stuffed with tender potatoes, poblano peppers, mushrooms, marinated cabbage and freshly made pico de gallo, topped with an incredible cashew “cream” and salsa verde.

We finished our tour at stop five, which was The Parlour, an ice cream shop serving up delicious ice cream. We had only one sample, a small sundae of mint cookies and cream with a small dollop of whipped cream. This was one of the best ice creams we had ever tasted, and that was a unanimous opinion.

As you step into The Parlour in Durham, the sugary whiff of heavenly desserts will hit you like a ton of bricks. The welcoming staff and unique ambience of the place will make you feel as though you have found the secret spot for indulgence seekers. And boy, will your sweet tooth thank you for it!

It’s a well-known fact that The Parlour has some of the best handmade ice cream in Durham with delicious original flavors. Not everyone knows that they also typically have at least two fully vegan ice cream flavors available, in addition to several vegan baked dessert items.

There’s a story behind so many of Durham’s local businesses. If you’re in the mood for dessert, head to The Parlour. The story began with Yoni and Vanessa Mazuz, who were serving their handmade ice cream in a modified pink-painted mini school bus all over the triangle.

The Parlour has the best flavors of ice cream and is the perfect spot for a treat on a warm day or dessert any time. The salted butter caramel is my go-to order. They’re not serving indoors yet, so take your cone to go and enjoy in the plaza right across the street.

You can find two of my favorites, Ko Kyu BBQ and The Parlour in the Motorco / Fullsteam area on Wednesday evenings, where the Bull City Running Club takes off from. It’s a good place to grab a beer, have some BBQ or sweet potato fries, and people-watch.

While we’re on the topic of ice cream, I am also a sucker for The Parlour’s homemade, seasonal and small batch flavors, which also happen to include fresh strawberry, along with peppermint stick, Girl Scout cookie, blueberry and so much more.

I think it might violate the Geneva Convention to go to downtown Durham and not get ice cream at The Parlour. Its ice cream appears on every Best of Durham list for good reason. Their most popular flavor is the rich Salted Butter Caramel.
