Yes, even the housemade hot dogs hiding under the golden batter of the corn dog.

After gaping at Grover, the rover used in Apollo astronaut training, and working up an appetite by striding across the center’s topographical floor map of Mars, we headed downtown for lunch at Proper Meats & Provisions, a combination butcher/sandwich shop that serves locally sourced, humanely raised meats in a historic building on Route 66. No shade intended to my favorite Lower East Side deli, but their James Beard-nominated pastrami was in a class of its own.

Arizona’s only exclusively local, whole-animal butcher shop and deli, Proper Meats + Provisions offers specialty cuts of meats and carefully curated local or premium imported products. All meats offered are humanely and sustainably farm-raised. Proper Meats + Provisions, owned by devoted local businessman Paul Moir, also offers an eat-in and takeaway menu featuring sandwiches, local cheeses, fresh-baked breads, house-made soups, as well as a thoughtful menu of craft beers and Arizona wines.

Another great spot is Proper located on Route 66 in the old Grand Canyon Café spot they have locally sourced products from all over the state, and their pastrami sandwich is top notch. Kiddie corner from the Market you have the Weatherford Hotel which offers four different bars and all kinds of food options. Coming full circle, we end with a few bars and a downtown staple for Pizza, Alpine Pizza on Leroux which has been downtown for over 30 years.

The entirety of the meat is from the nearby local shops and can be easily followed back to the source.

You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu at Proper Meats, a local butcher on Route 66. The deeply satisfying sandwiches include a banh mi with pork shoulder confit, a robust French dip, a fried chicken po’ boy, vegetarian muffuletta and even an elevated grilled cheese. All of these winners come with a side of house-made potato chips.

Proper Meats + Provisions (L + D) – from burgers to sliced deli sandwiches, Proper has a little bit for everyone – including vegetarians!. My favorites are the veggie muffuletta and the veggie burger!. Bahn Mi, Po’ Boy, cheesesteaks all served with a side of homemade chips.
