Breathing new life into an old wooden house on 12 Mike’s Pike is family-owned Toasted Owl Cafe, a beauty of a big blue cabin whose sun-drenched porch regularly hosts $3 mimosa-heavy brunches chocked full of good vibes. A little bit of everything can be found on their breakfast and lunch menus, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free dishes. The founder, Cecily, has always had a fascination with art, and particularly owl art, therefore, you’re sure to find a wide variety of her funky-looking canvases and pieces throughout the building.

For a great breakfast go across the street from Mother Road on Mike’s Pike and you have the Toasted Owl a fun unique place to grab that weekend breakfast or a post bike ride lunch. I venture back down Phoenix and turn right on Beaver St. to drop into Beaver Street Brewery which has great food, and a great billiards hall that is usually a very busy spot during the school year. I’m partial to the Enchanted Forest which is a must try pizza at Beaver Street Brewery, and I also love their lunch special drop in, if you haven’t tried it.

Located in the historic district, the Toasted Owl serves a delicious array of breakfast and lunch favorites in a cozy and casual atmosphere with dog-friendly outside seating, Patrons can please their palates with flavorful options such as omelettes, breakfast burritos and tacos, buttermilk pancakes, big fat French toast, kale and spinach salads, club sandwiches, Cubans, tuna melts, and burgers. Wash down the goodness with cold beer or a glass of wine. Dogs are welcome to join their owners on the spacious outdoor patio.

This brunch hot spot, with its packed patio and thrift store-like interior, serves fat French toasts, loaded omelets, crispy house potatoes, vegan burritos, endless coffee and $7 all-day mimosas. But as one waiter recently put it, “If you come to Toasted Owl and don’t eat a cinnamon roll, you didn’t really come to Toasted Owl." Topped with a generous spoonful of glaze that melts down into the warm, cinnamony-sweet roll, this is the ultimate start to any day or end to any meal. And yes, it really is lumberjack big.

The Toasted Owl serves up the freshest breakfast in town at affordable prices. On the menu, you will find all your traditional favorites such as omelets, burritos, and pancakes, along with a few specialties (gluten-free and dairy-free ginger buckwheat pancakes, vegan corn cakes, and veggie burritos to name a few). The menu is very allergy friendly, so even if you have a picky eater in your party, they will do just fine here (they even have gluten-free toast and tortillas, so nothing is really off limits).

Although not 100% vegan, The Toasted Owl Cafe offers a range of scrumptious vegan options that are sure to satisfy!. Some of the most loved vegan options on the menu include the Vegan Cakes made with applesauce, cinnamon, and almond milk batter mix, and the Vegan Egg Breakfast that features JUST Egg, house potatoes, toast, and two strips of vegan bacon. They also have vegan-friendly drinks, including almond milk lattes and a variety of herbal teas.

While not exclusively vegan, the Toasted Owl Cafe has designated vegan menus for both lunch and breakfast (served “owl day”), allowing for customizable plant-based options. A local favorite is the vegan cheese steak sandwich with grilled onions and bell and red peppers slathered with gooey white cheese on a crunchy Hoagie roll. But here’s the twist—the “steak” is actually savory sauteed mushrooms, a unique and delicious surprise.

So if you are in a group of people and the majority of you are meat eaters, but some of you have vegan dietary restrictions, then I think the Toasted Owl Cafe would be a great spot for you. Because although the other vegan places have meals that will be delicious evcen to non-vegan eaters, a lot of non-vegan diners just want a menu they are accustomed to. And that is what The Toasted Owl Cafe can do better than most places.

At both Toasted Owl locations, south of the tracks downtown and on the east side on Cortland Blvd., they supply a small basket of toys the kids can play with while they are there. We hit up The Toasted Owl for brunch Saturday morning and had the most fantastic french toast ever. Served with a side of fresh fruit, this soft, moist, cinnamon-ish food bomb exploded with flavor in my mouth and went down nicely with a refreshing mimosa.

The Little Gem Caesar at Shift Kitchen + Bar comes loaded with flavor—not surprising, considering it’s tossed with pine nuts, crostini, boquerones (mild white anchovy fillets) and lemon.
