Torch Bar and Grill

501 Bar and Grill is a stylish, lively downtown venue reminiscent of a Manhattan martini bar, complete with art deco and modern accents. Established in 2009, this grill originally served small plates but has grown to include regular entrées, all of which will suit a variety of tastes. The eclectic menu includes options such as steak and gravy fries with flank steak, house-cut fries, blue cheese plus a green peppercorn-brandy sauce and the portobello burger topped with roasted red pepper, caramelized onions, fresh mozzarella and pesto aioli.

Then a few nice dinner choices: 501 Bar and Grill (tapas-type menu and cocktail bar); Blackstones (Irish and American pub and sports bar); and also Cork on Saginaw (wine bar with inspired contemporary American cuisine). All three of these are within 1-2 blocks of the parking lot, all on South Saginaw Street.

The Torch was the second bar/eatery that we visited when we first came to Flint, and I'll never forget what our boss said: "This place...it's a dive bar, but it's the best." Walking down Buckham Alley, I thought, "Wow, what a great location!" Look, I'm from Wisconsin, where there's more bars per square mile than grocery stores. Specifically, I'm from Milwaukee, which prides itself on dive bars (to be fair, they did make the list). But I couldn't agree more with this description of The Torch:

Situated in the Entertainment District of downtown Flint, Torch Bar & Grill has been in business for more than 50 years. Many of the locals consider the Torch Burger — a ½-pound fresh ground beef patty served with your choice of toppings — to be the most unbelievable burger in Genesee County. This old-time pub makes awesome beer-battered fish and chips, and customers can also enjoy sandwiches, wedge-cut French fries, onion rings, and veggie burgers.

A Flint institution since 1931, The Torch Bar & Grill is a beloved gathering spot known for its laid-back atmosphere and delicious burgers. This iconic dive bar offers an impressive selection of beers on tap, including local craft brews and domestic favorites. The Torch is famous for its made-to-order signature burgers, piled high with custom toppings and served alongside crispy fries.

If you prefer a more traditional bar food experience – eat like a local at The Torch Bar & Grill, one of Michigan’s best dive bars.
