Gaido’s restaurant was first opened in 1911 by its founder, San Giacinto Gaido, and has been serving the Galveston public (as well as many famous presidents, athletes and celebrities, such as Alfred Hitchcock) amazing food and seafood dishes for all these years. This ‘coastal classic’ serves an array of oyster and crab dishes (like ‘Oysters Maria,’ cornmeal-fried oysters with bacon and hollandaise sauce, and spinach-crab dip) and delicious appetizers (such as creole crawfish fondue, gumbo and ‘Watkin’s Bisque,’ a seafood-cream bisque with shrimp, tomatoes, onions and carrots). Gaido’s seafood menu includes myriad wonderful items, including blackened Atlantic tuna, pecan-encrusted catfish and flounder stuffed with shrimp and cracker-meal stuffing.

Begin your evening with a sunset stroll along the warm Gulf waters before savoring some of the seafood and Italian specialties, respectively, on offer at star restaurants such as Gaido’s (with their award-winning pecan pie and deep-fried shrimp balls) or Grotto Ristorante (where you should try the snapper Siciliano). If you are with a “classy” partner or pal who insists on some culture before you indulge in bacchanalian carousing, enjoy a few romantic arias at the The Grand 1894 Opera House or sing along at one of the three musicals staged each summer at the beautiful Moody Gardens.

It’s hard to get any more Gulf Coast traditional than this Seawall institution, but Gaido’s has kept up with the times by quite nicely by offering numerous GF items, including the combination grilled seafood platter with shrimp, scallops and your choice of fish, and the grilled deep sea scallops. The chicken Ponzini also comes highly recommended, thanks to its melding of charcoal-grilled chicken, wild mushrooms and Swiss cheese sauce.

Not only does Gaido’s serve delicious seafood, but it also offers a rich history as it first opened their doors to the beach-going public in 1911. San Giacinto Gaido started the restaurant with the intention of being the freshest fish house on the Gulf, and the restaurant has maintained that same reputation today– over a 100 years later.

The focus of our long weekend was new gourmet destinations in town, so old standbys like Rudy & Paco’s, Leon’s BBQ, Gaido’s Seafood Restaurant were passed by, but that isn’t to say you shouldn’t include them on your itinerary. Also, I don’t repeat things that I covered elsewhere. Specifically, Haak Vineyards and Winery in Sante Fe, TX is less than 30 minutes drive and the quirky Gilhooly’s about the same distance.

If you want good food with the view Gaido’s at 38th and Seawall has been doing it right for over 100 years. I also like Clary’s, 8509 Teichman, but haven’t been there recently. Olympia Grill has 2 locations, 49th and Seawall and my favorite Pier 21 where you can enjoy an exceptional meal and harbor view.

The first stop is Gaidos (3828 Seawall Blvd), a big Texas seafood staple that’s been around for forever. If you came to Galveston for Gulf Coast oysters, this is your spot. If you’ve never enjoyed one, they’re briny and taste like the sea.

This is ranked as #1 on TripAdvisor and we eat here every time we come to Galveston. FYI parking is horrible and it’s right on the Seawall. I’d also try to get reservations for during the week since the Seawall won’t be as crowded.
