Reviews Summary

Diners are captivated by the Dobbin House Tavern's unique historic ambiance and attentive service, with many praising the delicious food, especially the renowned onion soup and crab cakes. However, some found the menu unchanging and noted issues with seating and portion sizes, with one reviewer finding the food to be mediocre and overpriced for the serving size.

"The Dobbin House Tavern was a spectacular spot for a family meal. The atmosphere is extremely unique, set in an old historic home with so much character. Each dining area feels different, which makes every table a little special. The menu was excellent — everything we tried was delicious, and there honestly wasn’t a single dish we didn’t enjoy. The bread service was a standout, with a mix of butter rolls, cornbread, and even banana bread that was absolutely divine. Drinks were also fantastic, making the whole experience even better.

We had reservations for a Friday night, which I’d recommend since it does fill up. Parking was manageable, and the bathrooms were easy to access. Overall, it’s a charming and memorable place — perfect for family gatherings or even a date night. I would definitely return."

"Dobbin House Tavern has the greatest bar maid! Always smiling doing her best. The menu doesn't really change. The spinach salad is great as is the onion soup. The seating is difficult. Small tables too close to sit with ease. Had salmon on my spinach salad which was too cooked and dry. Not sure the chef knows how to season either."

Ruth Mc Neill

"We started the morning with a tour and the guide was amazing! The knowledge of the house and the owners and the general area was top notch. We ended our tour with lunch downstairs in the tavern. The wait staff was super friendly and wore period clothing. The historic atmosphere and awesome staff made for a wonderful experience. The food and drinks did NOT disappoint!"

Good Eats Guide: Gettysburg

Take a journey back in time at this authentic 1776 Colonial tavern on the National Register of Historic Places, where “porridges” or soups are still boiled over coals, served in pipkin (a small pot with a handle) with sippets (small bits of bread). Flatware and china are exact replicas of fragments found in the cellar, and “servants’” period clothing is authentic as well. It is named after Reverend Alexander Dobbin, an early frontier pioneer, and even drink specials like the Philadelphia Fish House Punch allude to his hobnobbing with George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, for a little dose of history with your supper.

So, we decided that we would do the whole “tourist experience.” We started at the visitor center before we visited several monuments and landmarks, and then we finished the day by watching the sunset on top of one of the observation towers- which is where we took this photo.
