Speaking of buffalo, The Buffalo Rose, which has been a center of food and entertainment since the days of frontier scout and showman Buffalo Bill Cody (who is buried on nearby Lookout Mountain), has been completely redesigned with new skylights, patio, and a new concert hall. Generals Grant and Sherman of Civil War fame once stayed in this historic building. Today, it has been completely transformed, preserving its exposed brick walls and historic atmosphere.

For live music, there’s no better venue than Buffalo Rose, located on a historical property at the corner Washington Ave and 12th street. You can catch a show nearly every weekend of the year at Buffalo Rose, or just stop by for dinner and drinks. We held a smaller party at Buffalo Rose in 2021, and between the delicious food, great drink package, amazing environment, and the incredible built in coordinator Patricia we know our wedding would be amazing!!!!. The planning process was truly a breeze thanks to Patricia's organization and expertise with event planning. It was an out of state wedding for us, and planning from a state over wasn't an issue at all.

Back in the spring, the Buffalo Rose reopened its restaurant, bar and music venue after an 18-month renovation at Washington Avenue and 12th Street. Over the summer, Basic Kneads announced a new brick-and-mortar pizzeria coming this fall to South Golden Road. And just this week, Bonfire Burritos spoke of a similar plan for its long-standing burrito truck, which is moving to a permanent space on Ford Street.

The Buffalo Rose is the backdrop for a full-sized buffalo statue on the corner of Washington Avenue and 12th St. It’s the perfect selfie spot. Golden’s largest building started as a hotel in 1859 and was a meeting site for Colorado’s Territorial Legislature. Civil War generals Grant, Sherman, and Sheridan stayed here, and a gangland shootout took place here in 1868.

But I'd skip the tour, too, heading directly to the tasting room for my three complimentary cold beers before strolling over to the Buffalo Rose, which used to be a divey spot that had a cheap buffalo burger-and-beer special and a claw machine filled with live lobsters. (I never did manage to nab one, but it was fun trying.)

My only warning about bringing your dog into the historic downtown area of Golden is that, especially on weekends, there are LOTS of loud motorcycles as biker types pack into the Buffalo Rose Saloon. (Think “Wild Hogs,” not real biker gangs.) So, if you have a sound-sensitive dog, these rumbling bikes can be a real issue.

Alright, I know you purists (especially those from Canada and Quebec in particular) would blanch at the thought of having nothing but poutine with gravy, cheese curds and fries. But this version only differs in the gravy. It’s just a little spiced up with Pueblo green chile, which is a very Colorado thing to do.

This bar and grill dates back to 1858, and oh my if only these walls could talk. But it’s also a fantastic place to grab a bite and catch live entertainment in Golden!. The interior feels like you’ve stepped into a cozy mountain lodge, with comfortable seating, wood accents and crackling fireplaces.
