The look may be a little late-'90s, early-aughts Miami, but the menu is pure Pacific Coast with favorites like ahi tuna poke with house-made kimchi, steelhead niçoise salad, mesquite-smoked carne asada, and curried-cauliflower steak.

Located in the Uptown Design District, you could easily mistake Eight4Nine for an art gallery, but it is, in fact, a restaurant. And a good one at that. The menu is wide-ranging, with everything from cheese plates to poke bowls to chicken Milanese, but just know you can’t really order wrong here.

One farm egg, British bacon, banger sausage, mushrooms, roasted tomato, and a potato scone make Ina’s Scottish breakfast, which is a big-ticket item. Treat yourself to a Deep Fried Bacon Bloody Mary made with vodka, tomato juice, Tabasco, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, deep-fried bacon, jalapeño olives, and a celery stick topped with a lemon and lime with a half celery salt rim if you’re feeling very merry.

Just three minutes’ walk away is my favorite coffeehouse in town, Ernest Coffee, where I have my usual espresso at a high wooden table under the mural of book-laden shelves, before my curiosity gets the better of me and I order the seasonal special, a fig/honey iced latte. Surprise: it’s amazing, rich, sweet, and refreshing.

Stop by after you eat at Eight4Nine Restaurant and before drinks at Mr. Lyons Steakhouse. Wear something with an elastic waistband or plan to let out your belt a notch or two.
