Although the menu changes seasonally, perennial favorites—a layered appetizer of fried green tomatoes and jalapeño pimento cheese, shrimp, and locally ground grits, and the wonderful white-chocolate banana-cream pie—are always available.

Stop in at Soby’s or The Lazy Goat, or head out a little further to Swamp Rabbit Café & Grocery. On Saturday mornings you can also ride all the way down to the farmer’s market in nearby Travelers Rest.

Soby’s, Greenville’s first non-meat-and-three restaurant to grace downtown in 1997, is a local’s staple serving refined Southern eats. The upcountry shrimp and grits, country ham and Brussels sprouts, and boiled peanut hummus are not to miss. For the best Reedy River view, book a patio table at the Lazy Goat and nosh on the chef’s talked-about paella and fried goat cheese balls—a hand-rolled luxury.

One of the city's original fine dining establishments, Soby's is known for its modern, Southern cuisine. They offer starters like pimento cheese with pickled okra, steamed mussels, and she-crab soup, plus entrées such as slow-smoked beef short ribs, fried chicken, and shrimp and grits. In addition to being open seven days a week for dinner, the restaurant offers Saturday and Sunday brunch.

The food is ok and the servers are nice, but it's hard to recommend this when you can go across the street to Nosedive and get a better brunch for cheaper. They also don't have some of the gluten free options advertised on their website for brunch - there's maybe 2 things on the menu if you have a gluten free person in your party. Sobys may just be better served as a dinner place

If you are up for shelling out a few bucks, Soby’s offers a wonderful Sunday brunch buffet. The ambiance is really nice, the service is great, and the food is wonderful. For under 20 bucks, you get to enjoy a made-to-order omelet bar, numerous breakfast dishes and sides, several lunch offerings, and the most delicious dessert assortment in town.

When Carl Sobocinski opened his eatery in 1997 in a onetime shoe store, nobody gave it much of a shot. Main Street was still more drive-through than destination. But residents have since learned not to underestimate Sobocinski, who now has a stake in five area restaurants, and Soby’s has become the nexus of Greenville’s burgeoning food scene.

Continuing down Main Street to the Reedy River I tried them at Soby’s, Larkins on the River, and Rick Erwin’s, too. Each was very different and delicious in its own way. Some were rich and creamy, with flavors melding together, while others were fresh and light, highlighting each ingredient and piled high, almost blanketing the grits.

25 years ago, downtown Greenville was not the bustling scene it is today. It was a slew of boarded-up buildings and not much to do. Let alone go out for the evening.

Minelli said working alongside Carl Sobocinski, owner of Table 301, Soby’s parent company, was essential in his development as an owner of his own restaurant.
