A place that is extremely popular, Jackie Rey’s Ohana Grill is set a little way out from the main strip, perfect for visitors seeking a little time away from the seafront. The food here is fantastic; the fish is cooked perfectly and is paired with chargrilled vegetables and sweet purple potatoes, and the wasabi crusted calamari is out of this world. A laid back shack that gets extremely busy at the weekends, this is a top spot to enjoy some seafood in a convivial atmosphere.

Located in the historic Kaikodo building, Jackie Rey’s originally began in Kona. Owners Paul Streiter and Jackie Rey were so captivated by the building’s history and charm — featuring a vintage bank vault and a 150-year-old English bar — that they decided to expand, leading to the establishment of Jackie Rey’s Hilo. The menu highlights locally sourced produce, fresh-caught fish, and hand-cut fillets, delicious options such as house-made lobster ravioli with seared Hawaiian prawns or the mushroom bowl with crispy local Oshiro tofu, yakisoba noodles and vegetables.

Although relatively new to the eastern side of the Big Island (their sister restaurant in Kona has been open for a decade longer), this family-run dinner joint has quickly established itself as one of the classiest places for a meal out in Hilo. The dining room was once a bank lobby, with relics of its past shown in the high ceilings, white pillars, and even an exposed vault, adding to the historic charm. And like other restaurants in town, seafood takes center stage, from sizzling Kona prawns to crusted ahi and crab cakes prepared with a Thai red curry.

With locations on both the Kona and Hilo sides of the island, there really is no good excuse for missing out on a meal at Jackie Rey’s Ohana Grill. If you enjoy food comas the pu pu platter, quarter loaf of rosemary bread, and guava BBQ babyback ribs left me in a wonderful state of existence.

This is the perfect place for locals and tourists to grab some fresh seafood, a perfectly cooked steak, a refreshing salad or a filling plate of pasta.
