If you expect that a restaurant named Pineapple's would serve tropical beverages in hollowed-out pineapples, you'd be exactly correct. Always packed, this open-air bistro looks like a tourist trap, but there is a fine-dining component to the menu, which includes fresh catch, kalbi ribs (grilled, Korean-style), teriyaki flank steak, burgers, wraps, and sandwiches. Check out the daily specials like salmon salad or the Caprese burger.

Family-owned and operated, Pineapples is a relative newcomer to the Hilo dining scene, but has certainly made its mark. Upbeat and exciting atmosphere set against a historic, open-air building in downtown Hilo, Pineapples’ commitment to their community shows in their choice of ingredients, vendors, and live entertainment – but let’s talk about the food!. Hawaiian traditions new and old come together with expertly-prepared comfort foods like cheeseburgers, BBQ sandwiches, and generous pupus to leave the whole table happy.

This very popular restaurant is easily recognisable by the long line of pineapples you can see near the entrance. The reason for this becomes obvious as soon as your realise that the signature drink of this restaurant is the Pineapple Pow, a delicious ice cold slushy (either with or without alcohol) served in a pineapple. It’s not just about the drinks either, and I was very happy to see that they had a separate vegetarian/vegan menu (which you will have to request), with a decent variety in their options.

One of the most popular Hilo restaurants and located downtown in an open style venue, Pineapples is also a local favorite spot and popular with tourists. The fun bar scene, indoor / outdoor like environment and live music make this a really fun and easy place to hang out and enjoy some bistro style food with local flavors and ingredients. Everything on the menu is good including their favorites like fish and chips, hamburger and some other local favorite foods from the area.

We had a table right next to the railing so it was nice for the kids to watch people walk by and it kept their attention for awhile. The restaurant caters mainly to tourists as you will find little to no “locals” dining here, and there isn’t a kid menu but lots of kid-friendly choices. The portions are huge so order according to your appetite; our children ordered and shared a BBQ sandwich and couldn’t even finish it.

At Pineapples Fresh Island Cuisine the Nui Nachos consists of homemade corn tortillas layered with cheddar jack cheese, black olives, sour cream, guacamole and pineapple salsa!. Customize this appetizer with your choice of veggies, chicken, or Kalua pork, fresh catch fish or sauteed shrimp. Our personal favorite is adding the tender, mouthwatering Kalua pork.

Pineapples are a disappearing crop and now are mostly grown on the islands of Maui and Oahu. The Big Island agricultural scene was up to a few decades ago dominated by the sugar cane industry, but that has also disappeared by now. Visit the Hawaii Plantation Museum in Papaikou to learn more about the rich history of the sugar plantation era.

Full disclosure, we didn’t actually get a chance to dine at Pineapples in person. It’s always so packed with tourists from the nearby farmers market it’s hard to get a table. But they went into the effort of creating a dedicated vegan friendly menu and even highlight on their homepage that there are vegan and gluten free options.

Pineapples, one of my favorite places to eat in Hilo, contains a bunch of island-inspired cuisine from fresh, locally caught fish, to fresh fruits and vegetables. This open-air restaurant has an awesome happy hour daily, from 3pm-5pm. It is a great place for a quick bite to eat and for a group to hang out.

Pineapples is the most touristy looking restaurant in Hilo, which still doesn’t make it all that touristy, but it was enough for me to avoid it for a long time. I finally went with my brother, and after that he wanted to eat there every single night. Not everything is excellent, but most items are.
