Merriman’s Honolulu is the embodiment of locally-sourced, Pacific Rim cuisine, artfully prepared and served with a side of urban views from the ourdoor dining area. Chef Peter Merriman is a founding father of Hawaii regional cuisine, and his Honolulu outpost continues his mission to support local farmers while delighting patrons with his pioneering menu. Sommelier Dusty Grable explained that, like these other restaurants, when he added natural wines to the menus at Livestock Tavern (opened 2014), Merriman’s Honolulu (opened 2018), La Vie and Quiora (both opened 2019), the word “natural” never came into conversation. Instead, he considered this type of winemaking to have a “hands off approach” and aimed to carry wines with integrity. “All the best wineries don’t have to use the word ‘natural’ to sell their wine,” Grable said.

My first Mai Tai was ordered at the Honolulu location of Merriman’s, an upscale restaurant focused on Hawaiian cuisine that has several spots spread across the island chain. The Merriman’s Mai Tai is something of a signature and is also available on their happy hour menu for a discounted price. (I must compliment the restaurant for serving the drink—which I ordered at 4pm, the moment happy hour concludes—at the discounted price.)

Our absolute favorite mai tai on O’ahu is sold at Merriman’s and also Monkeypod Kitchen (two of Oahu’s Best Restaurants, which have sister locations on the other islands). Both restaurants are operated by locavore chef Peter Merriman, so they serve the same excellent mai tai recipe.

Merriman’s Honolulu is right across from Dave and Busters on Auahi Street. This beautiful, farm-to-table restaurant is known for pioneering that restaurant in Hawaii. The interior is stylish with wood floors, high ceilings, and plenty of outdoor seating.

Merriman’s chef had a vision for growth and local agriculture in the rich volcanic soils of Hawaii. They serve food that is made with local meat and produce, and the results are just amazing. You’ll find so many great options on the lunch menu.

A leader in Hawaii’s farm-to-table culinary scene, Merriman’s Honolulu is a treat. The restaurant feels like a melange between a neighborhood bistro & an old Hawaiian establishment. Lively, urbane, and whimsical are how we would describe it.

However, my all-time favorite was at Moku Kitchen, and its sister restaurant Merriman’s. Their Mai Tais stand out with a honey-lilikoi foam topping that adds a sweet touch.

Merriman’s is in Honolulu and is a good spot for a nice dinner. Maybe the best macadamia crusted fish I have ever had.
