Reviews Summary

Rainbow Drive-In is celebrated for its authentic Hawaiian comfort food and generous portions at reasonable prices. Diners love the classic plate lunches and local atmosphere, though some note a decline in food quality over the years. It remains a popular spot for a taste of Hawaii, with many recommending it as a must-try experience.

"What is it about eating food out of a box, that is just so satisfying? Perhaps it’s because if there’s no mess, there’s no stress! Go ahead a throw etiquette out the window. When you’re eating out of a box, you can really go ham. Food was hearty and freaking yummy. I should really stop writing reviews before lunch time…"

Frank Biermann

"The venerable local plate lunch spot that’s been here for decades. Got the mixed plate for old time sake and food was up within a few minutes.

Sad to say it wasn’t as excellent as I remember. I don’t know if it’s just me, but the taste was just OK. some of the other places on the mainland is better (not L&L there though).

Meat a little on the dry side and excess mayo in the Mac salad.

Would still recommend, to check that off your list, and in the case, I may have come on a bad day. I probably won’t be back this trip because there are a bunch of other places I need to try."

Alex

"I personally prefer more flavor with natural spices so this place just wasn’t a fit for me. I did like the atmosphere, ambiance etc and was glad I came out as this place came highly rated. Good portion sizes for sure."

The Best Food in Hawaii : Food Network

I'm going to get a plate lunch," President Barack Obama proclaimed, moments after arriving in Honolulu on his first vacation home after taking office. The plate lunch —a carbfest composed of a protein, two scoops of rice and a scoop of macaroni salad — is a staple of Hawaii’s food life. One of President Obama’s favorite places to get it (and ours) is Rainbow Drive-In, which hasn't changed much since it was founded in 1961 by Seiju Ifuku, who learned to cook during World War II while serving in the Army.

Where to Eat on Your First Visit to O‘ahu

Upon landing in Honolulu on his first vacation home after taking office, former President Barack Obama famously proclaimed, “I’m going to get a plate lunch.” The plate lunch—a carbfest with a protein, two scoops of rice and a scoop of macaroni salad—is a staple of Hawai‘i’s local food culture. One of Obama’s favorite places (and ours) to get it is Rainbow Drive-In, whose original location just outside Waikīkī is popular with hungry surfers looking for a quick, filling and affordable meal. Shoyu chicken, barbecue beef or pork cutlet plates tend to be most popular; if you can’t decide, just get a mixed plate.

A neon rainbow arches its way over the sign at Rainbow Drive-In, where local comfort food is served up in large portions. What began as a small eatery serving up 50-cent chili and rice plates, $1 BBQ beef plates, 25-cent hamburgers and 14-cent fries in 1961 has now become a well-loved eatery that has been featured on shows such as Diners, Drive Ins and Dives and Hawaii 5-0. Though it has branched out to several locations on Oahu, its simplicity and good eats have remained the same.

Now, I'll admit it would be hard to stick to a budget of $5.00 here but sandwiches (like spam 'n egg and tuna salad) are all under $5.00, while cheeseburgers are a steal at $3.75 and a serving of chilli with rice is just $4.50. Slush floats (strawberry punch with a scoop of vanilla ice cream) are affordable at just over $4.00.

Honolulu - Oahu Travel Guide

Two of the island's most popular places to grab a plate lunch include the Rainbow Drive-In (by Waikiki) and L&L Hawaiian Barbecue (which has multiple locations near the city center). For Hawaiian fare that's not served as a plate lunch, travelers recommend dining at Kono's Restaurant, Ono Seafood and Uncle Bo's Pupu Bar & Grill. More upscale (and pricier) options include celebrity chef outposts like Roy's Waikiki, which is helmed by Roy Yamaguchi.

Where to Find Cheap Eats in Honolulu

If there is just one thing you can learn about discovering cheap eats in Honolulu, it’s that appearances can be awfully deceiving.
