Reviews Summary

Himalaya Restaurant is a popular spot for bold South Asian flavors, with many praising its unique fusion dishes like the spiced fried chicken and generous portions. However, some reviews mention inconsistencies in flavor, with certain dishes being described as bland or undercooked, and occasional complaints about slow service or pricing not matching expectations. Despite mixed reviews, the restaurant is frequently celebrated for its owner's recommendations and authentic taste.

"Unexpected but... you HAVE to get the steak here. Hands down the best steak i've ever had. hands down. and i've eaten some expensive steaks. The best thing to do is to come here and ask what the boss man recommends (!!) He knows best. Have a good sense of humor when coming here and you'll be good. 😂🙏 Best food ever. I look forward to coming here whenever i come to houston and taking visiting friends from all over."

Dorian Electra

"I tried biryani and malai kofta. The biryani here is just plain rice with some curry put together, not even mixed. The kofta is merely watery gravy with potato filling; you can hardly taste any malai. Overall, the food is very bland—flavors are too subtle for a Desi, might interest international audience."

Bharath kumar Kande

"Terrible experience at Himalayas Restaurant in Houston. The owner was rude and even made an offensive comment about Gujarati people, completely unprofessional.

The food was below average, soggy biryani, bland tawa gosht, and definitely not worth the high prices. He kept pushing us to order more, even when we said we were done, which felt greedy.

To top it off, he offered a discount only if we paid in cash possibly to avoid taxes. Very shady. Not going back and wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone."

Houston's 100 best restaurants of 2023: Our food critics' top picks

The small storefront in a bustling shopping center in Houston’s Indian-Pakistani business district belies this restaurant with a big menu, big flavors and the big personality of gregarious host and chef Kaiser Lashkari. Classic menu items like saag paneer and chicken tikka masala are consistently and deftly executed, but Lashkari’s restless inventiveness transforms the menu into a uniquely Houston creation exemplified by the addictive skinless whole fried chicken dusted with Indian spices and herbs. What to order: The deluxe BBQ/grill platter is a tour-de-force of tandoori-style cooking, featuring ground lamb and chicken seekh (skewer) kebabs, fragrant with onions and garlic.

While Himalaya is known for its fusion dishes like the famous Indian-spiced Southern fried chicken, Indian quesadillas, and Pakistani pastrami (earning Andrew Zimmern’s and Anthony Bourdain’s stamps of approval), its more "traditional" fare is just as daring. Lashkari packs massive flavor in a tour of the subcontinent, offering curries from Hyderabad, Bombay, Punjab, and Peshawar, as well as seafood dishes, such as Goan salmon and shrimp curries.
