Leviathan Bakehouse has raised the bar for Indianapolis pastry-making. Whenever I take a stroll around the Bottleworks District, my taste buds can’t help but gravitate toward Leviathan—a place that never fails to deliver the promise of quality. Leviathan has mastered the art of crafting delectable treats, from zesty lemon meringue eclairs to their Basque cheesecake (which is a perfect companion to a hot cup of coffee.). They also serve a variety of breakfast, brunch, and lunch options including their popular Chorizo Gravy Polenta.

The long-awaited Leviathan Bakehouse opened its doors on July 20. Pete Schmutte (formerly of, ahem, Cerulean AND Beholder) has long dreamed of opening his own place, according to his recent Q&A with Indianapolis Monthly, and we can’t wait to see it become a reality. Who else could put caviar on a white chocolate tart and make it become one of the best desserts in the city?

Leviathan Bakehouse in Indy’s Chatham Arch neighborhood has a knockout “Tierra” Chocolate Petit Entremet for $7, and if you’re a chocolate lover, this decadent dessert will check all of the right boxes. It has chocolate mousse, chocolate sponge cake, a chocolate crunchy layer, and raspberry jam. As an added bonus, it is also completely vegan, gluten-free, and nut-free.

When I strolled into Leviathan Bakehouse, the buzz of excitement was palpable—a sure sign of a beloved local spot. Everywhere I looked, I saw pastries that were nearly sold out, which only heightened my anticipation. I was particularly thrilled to try their renowned Pain Au Chocolat, which locals claim is the best in town, and they weren't exaggerating!

A great bakery spot for grabbing breakfast or a light lunch (The MEG is really yummy!) and they have phenomenal breads, especially their milk bread (which often sells out quickly because that’s how good it is)
