Reviews Summary

St. Elmo Steak House is lauded for its iconic, spicy shrimp cocktail and expertly prepared dry-aged steaks. Diners consistently praise the impeccable service, classic upscale atmosphere, and extensive wine selection, making it a memorable dining destination for special occasions and business dinners. While the food and service are generally exceptional, some patrons note an inconsistency in service warmth and a desire for a stricter dress code.

"Historical steak house in Indianapolis that lives up to its name. They pride themselves in the history. The servers are properly addressed as stewards and those that have tenure are actually listed on the menu. The shrimp cocktail is definitely a sinus opener since they use a LOT of fresh horseradish. Not for the faint of heart. The dry aged steaks were delicious and cooked to perfection. Portions were large and worth the price. Our server, Laura seemed too practiced and not genuine (her name was on the menu as a 5 year tenure). Merely using terms of endearment like 'lovey' or 'honey' seems a bit demeaning when you aren't looking someone in the eye or smiling much. She mentioned an assistant Jen, that i never saw during the meal. The food and cocktails made up for it ,though. Will be trying other steak houses next time I'm in the area to compare. Valet $15. Came in at reservation time and did not have a wait."

"Worthy of every ounce of hype!
The place is beautiful inside and out, with every area being part cosy dining room, part museum. The service was spectacular. Friendly, memorable, attentive, good humoured, and able to give menu recommendations without feeling pushy. And the food…just wow! Yes, the shrimp cocktail (or more accurately, the horseradish) will knock your socks off. Yes the steaks are amazing. The fries though, were a standout. Best fries I had on my trip to the states. They also know how to make a cocktail!
I would go back to Indy specifically to eat here."

Bill

"So glad I visited this restaurant during a business trip in Indianapolis. The restaurant has been serving up deliciousness for a long time. I was able to go to their upstairs speakeasy to enjoy their signature St. Elmo’s Coke made with cherry vanilla whiskey and drunken cherries. They had a “Devour” menus during my visit which was perfect because I was able to enjoy all of the classics like the St. Elmo Shrimp Cocktail and steak. The servers and staff in general are well dressed and very attentive. What a great experience!"

24 Best Things to Do in Indianapolis Right Now

Ask any Indy resident where to get the best steak in town, and it’s almost guaranteed they’ll say “St. Elmo’s.” On any given night, you’ll find the city’s celebrities and movers-and-shakers huddled around a table imbibing a ribeye or porterhouse. It’s an unofficial law that every meal must start out with St. Elmo’s signature shrimp cocktail appetizer, with a sauce that will have you reaching for your water glass after the first bite.

In 2012, this storied steak house was named a James Beard Award-winner in the category of America's Classics. It's clear why: The ornately carved wood trim, tin ceiling, bow-tied servers, and walls covered with photos of famous diners throughout the decades hint at its history. Expertly done filets, prime rib, ribeye and porterhouse confirm its continuing appeal.

Indianapolis Steakhouses

If you are surprised to find this historic chophouse listed here, then prepare to be blown away by a little race Indianapolis hosts each May. Debuting in 1902, St. Elmo has become as much a cultural institution as anything else the city has to offer, with pinching back tears through the shrimp cocktail starter an obligation on par with weepily singing along to “Back Home Again in Indiana.” In addition to scorching your sinuses with St. Elmo’s horseradish-heavy cocktail sauce, as a resident of this town you must—at least once—loosen up with an Elmo Cola (a little bottle of Coke with a side glass of cherry-vanilla bourbon to pour and sip at your leisure), go with the tomato juice starter over the bean soup (weird, yes, but the dull chill is a nice stomach primer), and tear into the 12-ounce New York strip that’s been dry-aged for 60 days. Not that you’ll need it, but dessert should be a slice of sugar cream pie to remind you that civic duty can be pretty sweet.

The Best Restaurants in Indianapolis

Arguably the most revered dining establishment in town, St. Elmo is famous for its dry-aged steaks, tuxedo-clad waitstaff, vast wine cellar and celebrity sightings; photo-lined hallways honor notable guests who’ve visited these hallowed dining rooms through the years. All dinners include an appropriately retro navy bean soup or tomato juice starter, and locals get a kick out of watching first-timers react to their first bite of the legendary horseradish-laced shrimp cocktail. Wash it all down with an Elmo Cola — a mini glass bottle of Coke to pour into vanilla/Luxardo cherry-infused Maker’s Mark.
