Housed within a former taxidermy and wildlife museum, the Gun Barrel is a perfect amalgamation of Western/casual/friendly and frontier/rugged/carnivorous. Unlike many of its competitors, this steakhouse sports an excellent selection of game meats, for that eclectic, deeply savory and slightly gamey flavor of the real Rocky Mountains. The taxidermied local fauna, log interiors and seating, and pine-yellow lighting all encircle the diner, creating a memorable, comfortable and delicious steak dinner, Wyoming style.

While Gun Barrel is widely known for its eclectic Old West fixtures inside — see: the sprawling display of full-mount game trophies and antique cowboy arti- facts — the charming patio makes for an equally memorable meal. Overlook the expansive valleys of Jackson’s landscape while slicing into the superior mesquite-grilled elk loin. So if you are a carnivore at heart and you are looking for a place in Jackson that features some nice outdoor seating then this is the place for you.

If interested in a finer dining experience, consider making a reservation at the Snake River Grill, Local, Gun Barrel, the Kitchen, Gather, Trio, Blue Lion, or White Buffalo Club. Suppose you prefer to live life more impulsively or happen to find that most restaurants are booked up. In that case, the following locations do not require reservations: Silver Dollar Bar & Grill, Hand Fired Pizza, Snake River Brewpub, or Sidewinders.

Opened in 1993 in what had formerly been the Wyoming Wildlife Museum & Taxidermy, Jackson Hole’s Gun Barrel Steak and Game House showcases a menu of wild game including bison and elk, prime steaks, seafood, chicken, pork, burgers and a killer vegetable lasagna. While there are so many wonderful excursions to undertake in Wyoming and Idaho, these are a few that were our favorites to plan and enjoy. “Wydaho” is a special place in our country with natural beauty at every turn, exhibited through the people, wildlife, and landscape. If you are looking for your next winter destination full of both indoor and outdoor adventures, this is the place for you.

Restaurants feature in abundance– if you’re looking to continue cowboy ambience, the Gun Barrel is perfect. With a wide selection of meat and game dishes, this testosterone filled, hearty but exquisite establishment is perfect for groups with a hankering for meat. The Ignight restaurant is another good’un, offering a menu of traditional dishes, often with an interesting twist.

Some ideas from us include Kampai (Japanese cuisine), Orsetto Italian Bar and Eatery, The Kitchen, Million Dollar Cowboy Bar Steakhouse, Code Red, the Mangy Moose and Gun Barrel Steak and Game House (which once upon a time was Wyoming Wildlife Museum and Taxidermy!). You might also ponder a private dining experience for your gathering of family and friends.

Gun Barrel: I remember when we first traveled to Jackson I was so excited about trying the food. I looked up all the recommendations, reviews, everything and Gun Barrel was never on my list. We stayed at a hotel just right down from this restaurant and Jordan said he wanted to go there because the restaurant was close and he liked the name of it haha.

The Gun Barrel Steak and Game House – The Gun Barrell is a great dinner option, especially if you are wanting something that fits the vibe of Jackson Hole. If you have never gotten a chance to try different game like elk and bison, this is a great place to do it. I went with the Pan Seared Elk Pops and the huckleberry reduction made it so delicious.

If Wyoming game is what you seek, The Gun Barrel Steak and Game House is probably the best fine dining game option in town. The food is wonderful, and the atmosphere screams Wyoming. This iconic restaurant embraces the spirit of the Old West, with its rustic ambiance adorned with taxidermy mounts and wood accents throughout the dining room.

Gun Barrel Steakhouse $$ – (Jackson) Housed in a retired wildlife art museum, this is my favorite steak house in Jackson Hole. Not only are all the old mounts and guns on display, they serve reliably good steak and game, always cooked to perfection. Try their Buffalo Prime Rib – it’s my favorite cut of meat there!

We really liked dinner at Gather and Gun Barrel, the burgers at Liberty Burger, breakfast at the Virginian is a must as well as morning coffee at Cowboy Coffee. Skip Cafe Geniveve for breakfast and go to the Virginian or grab a breakfast item at cowboy coffee. We also like Jackson Drug for lunch or dinner.

As you will discover during your visit, the Jackson Hole area lacks amazing steakhouses. One steakhouse you’ll have to add to your must-visit list is Gun Barrel Steak & Game House. This unique restaurant is filled with cowboy memorabilia and was formerly the Wyoming Wildlife Museum & Taxidermy.

Get a true taste of the Old West with buffalo, venison, and other exotic meats available at this unique eatery. You’ll be surrounded by cowboy artifacts inside the building that once housed the Wyoming Wildlife Museum.

A bull bison can weigh over 1000 pounds and yield up to 616 pounds of meat. Because bison can feed so many people, not to mention provide hides, teeth, and bones, they have long been sacred to Native American tribes.

Gun Barrel Steak and Game House is housed in a former wildlife museum. While this is another upscale dining experience, your kids will feel comfortable with the children’s menu. Or, try wild game like elk and bison.

Okay, it’s not necessarily a burger, but the log-cabin-esque Gun Barrel has every other part of the buffalo, including its giant ribs. Do you recommend this?

That night we had dinner at Gun Barrel Steak and Game House. It was good but nothing spectacular. I wish we would have gone to Hatch.

We are staying in a condo about 15 minutes from out of town. We will have a car and I am not especially concerned with price.
