What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hal & Mal's is celebrated for its vibrant atmosphere, live music, and hearty Southern cuisine, making it a Jackson landmark. While many praise the generous portions and unique decor, some diners have experienced long wait times and issues with food temperature or service attentiveness.
"Hal & Mal’s is Jackson Landmark!
A go-to spot for lunch, dinner and drinks and a great brunch! This is the place to people-see and eat!
Shrimp poboy as fine as anything New Orleans has to offer, along with the Gumbo.
Excellent fresh cut fries. Just crisp, salty potato goodness.
The brunch breakfast is satisfying! Eggs cooked to order, a tasty biscuit, bacon that is good enough for another order, home fries, a smoked sausage link and cheese grits. If you leave hungry it’s your own fault!!
Full bar, great beer selection and soft drinks and tea. “Happening” music over the house speakers and frequently have live music and bands.
Unique, neat atmosphere, friendly service and vittles that’ll keep you coming back!"

"So I think we could have had an absolute amazing meal here for sure, great potential for it, we arrived early and ordered drinks and appetizers which came out quick and delicious, we were waiting for others to join to order, when they arrived we ordered, then proceeded to wait a good 30-45 minutes for our food, we were enjoying good company so it wasn't terrible but a lil irritating, he came by once to tell us it would be out shortly, 20 minutes later after the other tables who ordered after got their meals ours came out, it looked delicious, but mine was barely warm and my husband's was cold, at that point it wasn't worth complaining, but he was super bummed since it tasted good but the cold really threw it off. Not sure if we will visit again, maybe but it wasn't really busy enough to get long waits and cold food."

"First time in Jackson and the whole community told me I needed to come here for breakfast so I did!!
I can’t remember my servers name for the life of me but she was so awesome!!! I remember she had strands of sparkly material in her long blond ish brown hair and called people cute names which I’m a sucker for and she ran around that place like a whirling dirvish!!!
I had the most delicious Southern Breakfast today! Started with Candied Bacon and then had the chicken on the catfish head biscuit with cheese grits and a side of sausage gravy. Needless to say, I left in a food coma!
The design of the place is cool and the bathroom cracked me up!!!"

This restaurant may look like you average diner, with art splattered across the walls and the quintessential Heinz ketchup bottle on every table, but there’s more to it than meets the eye – it’s also one of the best places to experience live music in the city. The restaurant is primarily known for its famous Blue Mondays, when it hosts jazz music for its patrons for a small fee, but you also have the opportunity to listen to music free of charge with bands such as Sound Barn, who are known for their “old time barn dance” music as well as bands that play Americana and Bluegrass music regularly at Hal and Mal’s. A Literary Adventure in Jackson, Mississippi
Housed in a historic freight depot building along the old New Orleans Great Northern Railroad, Hal & Mal’s was opened by brothers Hal and Malcolm White in 1984 with a concert performance by Albert King, Otis Clay, Jack Owles, and Willie Dixon. Compared to the elegant spaces in which I’d spent much of the day, the restaurant was blessedly casual, with a kind of cultivated, funky griminess of a hometown joint. The walls were covered in neon and memorabilia, and as I sat down, the bass player from the Raphael Semmes Quartet came to let me know that it was jazz night.

Blues, History And A Good Time
Another of the city’s many blues clubs is another giant joint that was also once a meat-packing plant called Hal and Mal’s. When we sidled in on a Saturday night, a rousing duo of guitarist Cary Hudson and his daughter was belting out a song. Later they’d do a pretty good rendition of a Fleetwood Mac classic and we munched on fried dill pickles and crispy onion rings at the bar.
