What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Diners consistently praise Crowbar Cafe & Saloon for its unique Western atmosphere, friendly service, and generous portions of American and Mexican fare. Highlights include the delicious burgers and breakfasts, with many calling it a must-stop on the way to or from Death Valley. While generally well-received, some find certain dishes, like salmon and burgers, a bit dry, but the beer and overall experience often make up for it.
"Let me just say, this place is AWESOME! Definitely a must stop especially if you're passing through on your way into Death Valley. The food here is excellent, the service even better and super friendly and what can I say, they have beer, whiskey and more at the bar! While they do have a cafe style restaurant section on the north side of the building, we chose to dine and imbibe on the saloon side and at the bar and mainly because it's way more fun. On our last visit, my wife got their grilled cheese sandwich, our friends got a cheese burger and I got a BLT that was outstanding. I mean really, the bacon was cooked perfectly and it was simply delicious. While I got potato salad that was just as good, everyone else got fries which were nice and hot out of the frier and we had a Stella to wash it all down. Of course, the atmosphere of the place is exactly what you'd expect to find out in the desert and it's perfect. And, I should note that they made some nice improvements to the inside since our last visit about a year ago and even the restrooms have been updated. I would highly recommend you visit this establishment if only to see how cool it is. Be sure to read up on the history of this place and check out all the cool stuff outside as well."

"Certainly make it a point to stop by Crowbar Cafe if you are anywhere in the area- granted, restaurant options are very limited in Shoshone or Death Valley, but regardless this is a great destination in itself.
This place oozes Western ambience, charm, and history; they have an incredible outdoor seating area hemmed in by historic buildings that looks like it hosts wonderful live music/similar events in the evenings.
The food menu is the basic American fare you'd expect (I would think most come here for drinking anyways) - it definitely didn't disappoint though. Crowbar has one of the best reubens I have ever tried. The portions were very generous and the prices here are reasonable especially considering how remote it is.
Additionally, the service here was excellent.
Definitely be sure to stop on by!"

"Honestly, we were so thankful that we came to this place! It is fascinating with so much history and an old style American saloon inside with incredible decor. Our waitress, Brianna, deserves a shout out for being so fantastic, warm & approachable. We were concerned about our food allergies but she was reassuring and made us feel at ease when ordering. The chef was also super friendly. We were the only customers in here so it felt like a really personal experience which was really nice. The food was delicious and portion sizes very generous so make sure you’re hungry when you visit! Definitely worth a stop if you’re driving through (or staying at) Shoshone on your way in or out of Death Valley National Park. You won’t be disappointed at all. If we ever come to this side of the world again, we will be sure to stop here. Thanks so much for a great evening."

Built in the 1930s, the diner-esque Crowbar—where antique photos adorn the walls and mining equipment stands in the corners—serves enormous helpings of regional dishes such as steak and taco salads. Home-baked fruit pies make fine desserts, and frosty beers are surefire thirst quenchers. Grab a table in the air-conditioned saloon or on the patio, where you can watch time tick by on the streets of Shoshone.
Best things to do in Shoshone and Tecopa near Death Valley
When there is literally only one restaurant in town, it better serve delicious, high-quality food — and that’s precisely what the Crowbar Café and Saloon does. The traditional Western-style restaurant serves classic American and Mexican fare in notoriously large portions, along with beer poured into large handled mugs. Most customers will immediately name the homemade tortilla chips, cactus salsa and french fries as the restaurant’s knockout items, but many also laud the prime rib plate, the spicy “rattlesnake chili” and the grilled “Ortega burger.” There are also some dishes you might not expect to find in the high desert, such as a blackened salmon plate and broiled rainbow trout with lemon butter.
