Red Dog Saloon

It would be difficult to think of Juneau without thinking of the Red Dog Saloon. This restaurant and bar has been in business since the end of the 19th century, when mining brought droves of newcomers to the Klondike region. Since then, the saloon has changed locations, but has held on to its history – and a collection of antique guns and furs that still decorate the dining room to this day.

The frontierish quarters of the Red Dog have housed an infamous Juneau watering hole since 1890. Nearly every conceivable surface in this two-story bar is cluttered with graffiti, business cards, and memorabilia, including a pistol that reputedly belonged to Wyatt Earp, who failed to reclaim the piece after checking it in at the U.S. Marshall's office on June 27, 1900.

This classic kitschy Alaskan bar is full of taxidermied animals and decades of initials carved into every wood surface available. During the summer, the floor is covered in wood shavings and you’ll probably have to wait in a line to enter since the Red Dog is a standard stop for most cruise ship passengers. Goofy photo opportunities abound.

With roots dating to Juneau's gold rush, the Red Dog Saloon is a western-style eatery, whose walls are adorned with an elaborate collection of animal heads and memorabilia, including a pistol left by Wyatt Earp when he passed through town.

The sign above the door of the Red Dog Saloon reads “Booze, Antiques, Sawdust Floor, Community Singing,” and it pretty much explains what you can expect inside. In its current Franklin Street location since 1988, the famous saloon has moved several times over the years. According to its website, “During territorial days, during his tenure of over twenty years as owner, Gordie Kanouse would meet tour boats with his mule that wore a sign saying ‘follow my ass to the Red Dog Saloon.’” Is it a hokey tourist trap?

If you like strange, cool, and different experiences then head to the Red Dog Saloon on your visit to Juneau and order yourself a Duck Fart. With a floor of sawdust and an old west meets Northern Exposure feel, you’re in for a treat. Things you can find on the walls include Wyatt Earp’s gun, a walrus oosik, trophy wildlife mounts, and paper currency signed by the many miners that have frequented the saloon from around the world since it opened.

The Hangar on the Wharf is located right downtown and provides plenty of space to park your car while you enjoy dinner or drinks at their seaside location. Their expansive menu includes local seafood favorites as well as international cuisine, making it easy to find something delicious regardless of what type of food you’re craving. Plus, they have an extensive selection of craft beers on tap so beer lovers won’t be disappointed either!

Lastly, if you’re in the mood for an adventure, consider stopping in for a few minutes or even a meal at the Red Dog Saloon for some live music. This is possibly the most uniquely Alaskan experience you can have. When I arrived back to the downtown I went to Red Dog Saloon which was one of the old historic saloons from the early days of the city, complete with a loud piano entertainer playing Johnny Cash, sawdust on the floor and famous guns above the bar. I would recommend sitting down for a drink and an appetizer, something like the smoked salmon dip or the potato skins and just taking in the atmosphere which is always a blast.

The Red Dog Saloon has been in operation since the heyday of the mining years in Juneau. In those years, it was the model of hospitality and fellowship for travelers…and now it continues that tradition of fellowship for all of the cruise passengers and independent travelers that make their way through the capital city. I brought Marnie here because a “duck fart” shot is a must when you travel to Juneau!

Franklin St., is the town's most famous bar, with a sawdust-strewn floor, a slightly contrived but nonetheless infectious frontier atmosphere, and walls covered with Alaska memorabilia. Locals hang across the street, at the Alaskan Bar, 167 S. Franklin, which occupies an authentic gold-rush hotel with a two-story Victorian barroom.

Back when the city was a hotbed of debauchery, the saloon was the main watering hole in town for prospectors, entertainers, and other rough-around-the-edges types looking for a stiff drink. Since then, the saloon has moved and changed owners repeatedly, but each generation has taken great pains to retain its off-beat, quirky charm.

Red Dog Saloon is brimming with character and a fun, lively ambiance. With its old-timey miner-prospector style and decor, it offers a unique backdrop for enjoying elevated pub fare and awesome burgers. The friendly staff and sensational live music, including performances by the house pianist, add to the saloon’s charm.

We took a short walk from the cruise terminal and enjoyed the Red Dog Saloon and its adjacent gift shop, just so you know, when the port is full, the retailers will be too. Don’t be surprised if customers waiting on a beer are lined out the door. I didn’t join the line because there are so many other things to do there.

Even though we stuffed our faces at Tracy’s, we HAD to stop in at the Red Dog Saloon because it’s one of the most famous and recognizable places in Juneau. I’ve heard the food is good, but you can just as easily stop by and have a drink. The inside is like stepping back in time by over 100 years, with music and all.

Approaching Juneau, the passengers were joking around about who would buy rounds at the Red Dog Saloon. We never made it inside, so not sure if anyone on our excursion got stuck with a large bar tab. Dropped off at the pier about three hours after the tour started, we decided to walk around the port area for a bit.

This place has serious character and roots going all the way back to the Gold Rush days. From the moment you walk through the swinging saloon doors and onto the sawdust-covered floors, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into the 1880s!. It’s part restaurant, part old-west museum, and all-around fun.

You’ll definitely want to visit the Red Dog Saloon and walk its sawdust floor. But if you want to try a spot the locals prefer and visit a true Alaskan hole-in-the-wall, spend an evening at the Triangle Club. They’ve been owned by the same family since 1947 and make an excellent Moscow Mule.

Located right on the water in downtown Juneau, the Red Dog Saloon is a top tourist institution, a must-see on a Juneau shore excursion, and definitely worth the experience. This isn’t the place for anything fancy, but it’s fun!. There is live music, and the servers wear cabaret clothes.

The style of this barroom near the cruise-ship dock is Wild West, with sawdust on the floor, and tourists as generally the intended clientele, but it’s still a fun place for a beer. Past the "Gents check your side arms, Ladies welcome" sign and the red swinging doors is a rowdy, fun…

Red Dog Saloon Juneau is definitely one of those fun things to do in Juneau. It's like a step back in time, with rowdy crowds, fun music and ideal for anyone who wants to have some quick food and a laugh. It's right besides the Juneau cruise port, making it very difficult to miss.

This place is more of a sight than any other restaurant in Juneau!. There were multiple live performances that really had a certain kind of humor, and the sawdust floor is REAL, people. The food was good, the drinks were good, and the duck fart was worth a try!
