Schooler and Smith’s restaurants — “Lupo” and The Rookery Cafe — were doing well until COVID-19 hit and everything shut down. Beau and Travis used the time to reset their operations. They upgraded the deli-kitchen area of Lupo with new wall and floor tile, built fresh tables and the restaurant bar and added inviting decor to the restaurant while it was closed.

With few daylight hours in the winter (and almost constant daylight in the summer) there’s a good chance your sleep schedule will be off while visiting Alaska. The Rookery Cafe, located in downtown Juneau, has all the coffee you might need to help get you going, in addition to delicious breakfast and lunch options (the Cereal Killer Toast is a must).

We walked into The Rookery Cafe to grab some coffee and a late lunch, and I was lucky enough to meet Travis Smith, founder and co-owner. When our food came out, he came out too with a sandwich in hand. As we enjoyed lunch and lattes, Travis loaded me up with tons of information about the food and beverage scene.

Monday morning the two of us grabbed one more breakfast at Sandpiper. George picked up the six of us in his van, we made a quick stop off at Kenny’s Liquor Market, and then went to meet Captain Blain and Monique Anderston at the Bob at Auke Bay for our Glacier Bay Sailing Excursion!

While the cafe has been serving espresso drinks, sweets, and lunch paninis for years, they have just recently started serving a casual bistro dinner menu. The cafe is modern and displays fantastic artwork on its walls. When dinner begins at 5pm, lights dim and candles are lit.

If you’re out all night chasing the midnight sun, chances are you’re going to need a good cup of joe to get moving the next day. The Rookery is a laid-back cafe with rocket-fuel coffee, homemade scones and walls festooned with local art. Do you recommend this?

The Rookery is the cutest coffee shop with a full menu and a pastry case that is what dreams are made of. I got an iced latte, avocado toast, and a chocolate croissant. The avocado toast was delicious, the dukkah nut and spice blend that tops it is fantastic.

The menu features dishes like fancy eggs benedict, supreme avocado toast, and a spiced potato bowl. It’s very low key and feels like the local’s breakfast place. The menu also includes some lunch items, in case you don’t have a chance to try it for breakfast.

We ate here for both breakfast and lunch but breakfast was my favorite. The french toast was so good as it’s cornflake crusted so nice and crunchy. My girls were in heaven because they had almond milk for them to have hot chocolate.
