Ketchikan is known as “the salmon capital of the world” so you can bet that they know how to prepare the fish in a few unique ways. At Annabelle’s, that includes a smoked salmon dip, tacos, linguine, chowder, and more. The restaurant has been around since 1927 inside the historic Gilmore Hotel, and still emanates a 1920s vibe -- including vintage slot machines from when Ketchikan felt more like the Wild West.

An unpretentious Victorian-style restaurant on the Gilmore Hotel's ground floor, Annabelle's serves pastas, steamer clams and other seafood dishes, and several kinds of chowder. Prime rib on Friday and Saturday evenings is a favorite, and the lounge, which has a jukebox, has a friendly vibe.

In my research before one of our trips to Ketchikan, Annabelle’s Famous Keg and Chowder House was also high on my list for a visit… this might be because one of our kitties is named Annabell (you can often see her on my Instagram stories when we’re not traveling), but it’s also because I am a chowder fiend and am always seeking out the best salmon chowder in Alaska. (Jury’s still out so I guess I just have to keep eating it!). While Annabelle’s dates back to the 1920s, the menu has definitely been updated with plenty of modern favorites, but I’ll admit it still feels a bit dated and ‘intitutional’ having eaten there during my September 2024 Alaska cruise.

If you would rather take in the cruise ship sites a little closer to the comfort of your all-aboard, stop in for a meal at the historic and convenient Annabelle’s Keg and Chowder House. Here you will be surrounded by the feel and comfort of an old-timey sailor’s inn, with the comfort foods that would soothe those weary souls after a long, drafty day on the water. Enjoy the deep seats and every sailor’s favorite staple, fish & chips, while browsing the large selection of beer on tap and watching the people mill about by Berth 2.

I remember the first time I ate there was a cold and rainy day in May,” Anciaux recalls. “I had just gotten off one of the cruise ships to take a walk, and it started to rain. I ducked into Annabelle’s and had a steaming bowl of clam chowder and some sourdough bread and, of course, an Alaska Amber beer, and waited for the rain to slow down.

Another excellent spot for seafood is Annabelle’s Keg & Chowder House.It is located in the Gilmore Hotel across from the Thundering Wings sculpture and is known for its fantastic chowder. Go for the seafood chowder or order the sampler, which has three variations.

Finish off your epic day in Ketchikan at Annabelle’s with a seafood dinner. Now, I’m not going to tell you how to live your life, because the whole menu is packed full of goodness, but be sure to at least order a cup of clam chowder.

Annabelles Famous Keg & Chowder is well-known for its fresh Alaskan Seafood. The interior is brightly lit with large windows providing an amazing view. Decent flavor just didnt expect the dish to be prepared unbarbequed.

If you are gluten free, DO NOT believe what the menu says or the wait staff. I was choosing between fish or a crab sampler which included clam chowder and a crab cake. Both entrees were marked gluten free.

It’s not that I think Annabelle’s has lost something, I just happen to go elsewhere with more regularity now. That somewhere else is New York Cafe for the arroz con pollo or one of their specials.
