Well, the locals all agree, it would be a shame to visit the Salmon Capital of the World without trying some of their freshest catches. This working person’s restaurant in Thomas Basin Harbor is a local favorite, and among the best restaurants in Alaska for fresh seafood, that overlooks the harbor where most of the delicious catches come into port.

Fish House - The Fish House is undoubtedly the best seafood place in Ketchikan. It’s right by the Salmon Landing and serves fresh fish in many forms (deep-fried or grilled salmon and halibut for fish and chips, fish tacos, smoked salmon, etc.) and if someone in the group doesn’t love seafood, the Fish House serves a mean burger. Everything is made from scratch and with local ingredients, each plate complimented by their signature dipping sauce and specially seasoned fries.

The Alaska Fish House by the water is known for its Dungeness Crab, Smoked Salmon Cornbread, and another delicious incarnation of smoked salmon chowder. Chowders are popular in every restaurant – the cooler temperatures and the rainforest atmosphere lend themselves well to a bowl of hot chowder any time of the year. The Alaska Fish House is more of a crab shack type establishment, so look for hearty portions of fish tacos, fish and chips, fish burgers, and burgers.

The above are my go-to for lunch as well, but as far as a bonafide Ketchikan, Alaska, lunch, the fish tacos at Fish House are the best in town. The elevated dining area is bench style, so it gets crowded and you’ll be sharing with other people, but the employees are quick with the orders and the long line out front moves pretty fast. When it isn’t crowded, it is probably the best place to sit, have a beer and look out over the harbor, or even up at Deer Mountain.
