Reviews Summary

Calhoun's On The River is praised for its stunning river views and its signature hickory-smoked ribs. Many diners enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere and the scenic deck. However, some reviews mention inconsistent food quality and service issues, with one diner experiencing a salad that tasted off and being charged for unwanted refills.

"Ate here for our anniversary June 20 2025. Nice staff as we entered the door, and we were able to get a table on the water. Actually only ones in there for a good while. The room was very cool, as it was extremely hot outside. We ordered off the specials and got an appetizer of bacon wrapped burnt ends and we each got the special of Prime rib and potato for only $20. The appetizer of bacon wrapped burnt ends were ok. They were not like any burnt ends we've ever had. They were not burnt ?? No burnt ends taste. The bbq sauce was good. Our steaks and potato were delicious and very tender. Our server was also very nice. We were served very quickly considering there was a party of 50 or more inside also ordering. Bread and slaw were also delicious. We will come back when in the area. Very pretty scenery eating on the water right out side the window and watching the river."

"The service wasn’t awful, but the food was not very good. The salad smelt like a fart and did not taste normal. I was also charged for refills i did not want. Also ran out of fries that I ordered 50 minutes before they closed. They did not inform me about this until all of the food came out. Not coming back. Not worth the $96 (mind you the waiter didn’t tell us they charged for refills so they constantly brought more)."

"I came to celebrate my best friend's birthday. We had a group of 4 and made reservations for 6:30pm. I will be sharing my thoughts on the parking situation at the end of this review. This was my first time ever going to Calhoun's. My husband and I got the Southern fried green tomatoes as an appetizer and shared the fried catfish with a loaded baked potato on the side. My friend and her mom got the loaded potato skins and they were the best thing we had all night. Huge portions and packed with flavor. They initially brought out what looked like a table spoon scoop of plain mashed potatoes by mistake but were happy to bring us our loaded potato once we brought it to their attention. Servers were wonderful when they were able to come by our table but it was evident that they were extremely busy. The main reason we came was for the jalapeno pineapple margarita. It was delicious. I got a blackberry margarita that was refreshing. We were never given any straws. The portions for the catfish were underwhelming. Their loaded baked potato was tiny compared to other restaurants. The fried green tomatoes were the best I've had and it came with a sauce that was also delicious. My friend's mother got the Southern salad and it looked phenomenal. Huge portions. My husband loves their craft beer (they make their own in house) and he said the Helles was his favorite. We did tell our server it was my friend's birthday and he brought out a Sunday with spoons for us to share. Overall, I feel that the experience and quality is a little over-hyped. It does have beautiful views but the parking is atrocious. We had to park at the parking garage a mile away and walk after almost missing our reservation trying to find parking."

If you are looking for casual southern cooking in a family-friendly atmosphere that also offers great views of the Tennessee River, then I recommend Calhouns on the River. Sure, Knoxville offers lots of fine dining, but if you are traveling with kids, you might be looking for something with atmosphere and also family-friendly. Conveniently located right downtown and along the riverwalk greenway, Calhouns is a regular stop for me when I bring friends or family to Knoxville.

The hickory-smoked ribs are justifiably renowned at Calhoun’s on the Tennessee River (and just as succulent at its six other locations). But the waterfront eatery also draws raves for equally coveted menu items ranging from pork chops and smoked chicken to entree salads and Spinach Maria – a must-try side – along with the restaurant’s famously upbeat ambiance. “Everything on the menu is good, and the service is always stellar,” Brooks says.

The restaurant chain has well-established links throughout East Tennessee and is a household name in the Scruffy City. But none of the locations provide as unique of a dining experience as the downtown deck at Calhoun’s on the River. Customers seated beneath umbrellas, at the outdoor bar or in the enclosed deck are surrounded by panoramic views of downtown Knoxville that are especially stunning as the sun begins to set.
