Located next door to Marisi, this Mexican restaurant is run by first-generation Mexican Americans who seek to bring authentic Mexican flavors and dishes to the San Diego area. The restaurant looks fun, laid back, and trendy but its menu is sophisticated with elevated takes on dishes like tacos and flautas with a price tag to match. This restaurant is definitely not for a cheap date night out but it’s a fantastic semi-splurge with mouth-bursting flavor, great drinks, and a truly fun atmosphere.

Okay so let’s start this off with a clear explanation on the four star rating on atmosphere: this restaurant has a very casual, street/outdoor vibe to it that I loved, but not everyone is going to care for. They even have street art (some of you may call it graffiti, but you are mistaken) adorning the walls and even a massive piece hanging over the bar. They’re made with love by “Chor Boogie” out of Mexico City and he’s done all of their street art for their various locations.

This combo comes together perfectly at Puesto, where the best tacos in La Jolla means an elevated, modern take on the classics. At the 1026 Wall St. restaurant, sit inside or out and feast on fresh, sustainably grown, all natural and organic ingredients, found in items like Puesto’s short rib quesabirria, swordfish, lobster, filet mignon taco and more. Start with one of Puesto’s guacamoles or ceviches and a high-quality, top-shelf cocktail before diving into the main event.

Other recommended places to try by Eater.com include the neighborhood restaurant Candor by Guiseppe, The elegant Marine Room for fine dining with oceanfront views, Nine-Ten Restaurant and Bar, Galaxy Taco and Puesto for casual Mexican food, Catania Coastal Italian and El Pescador Fish Market for great seafood. The Promiscuous Fork is known for burgers, sandwiches and Southern food and the casual The Cottage for breakfast and brunch. Himitsu is also recommended for sushi.

We had a few La Jolla Mexican restaurants to choose from, but we ended up selecting Puesto. Puesto, which was founded here in San Diego by first-generation Mexican Americans, shows off a love for the amazing flavors of Mexican and the family’s love of delicious tacos. Puesto perfectly mixes that casual eatery feel with elevated culinary elements—like their Puesto Perfect guacamole which takes their already tasty classic recipe and adds parmigiano and reggiano cheese.

Puesto is a far cry from fine dining, but it’s made it onto our list because it’s rare to experience Mexican food as authentic as this without traveling to the taco stands of Mexico City. Swing by after a day at the beach to sample Baja fish tacos and chicken flautas, and don’t miss the delicious short rib birria.
