Reviews Summary

Sushi Ota is widely praised for its exceptional quality sushi and authentic Japanese atmosphere, with many calling it the best in San Diego. Diners appreciate the freshness of the fish, the skill of the chefs, and the attentive service, especially when sitting at the sushi counter. However, the restaurant's high-quality experience comes with a premium price tag, which some find to be quite expensive.

"Sushi Ota is clearly one of the most popular sushi spots in town, and for good reason. The restaurant has a refined, intimate atmosphere. Reservation is highly recommended as they get very busy and usually has a wait line. All the sushi chefs are Japanese, which adds a level of authenticity and tradition that’s reflected in both the preparation and presentation of the food.

Service here is top notch! Friendly, attentive, and professional. The presentation of each dish is elegant, and the quality of the fish is great.

With that said, I found the prices to be significantly higher than other sushi restaurants, in some cases nearly double. While the food is definitely high quality, I personally felt that the overall value didn’t quite justify the cost. I’m not here to bash the place. I’m just giving my honest perspective. I know what great sushi tastes like, and while Sushi Ota delivers in many areas, the price to quality ratio left me a bit underwhelmed.

Still, it was an amazing experience, and I’d recommend it to anyone who’s looking to enjoy authentic sushi in a more upscale setting. Just be prepared for the premium pricing."

Mike R

"Either my standards for sushi are very high, or this place is overhyped. I’ve been twice and I can say that everytime, I am pretty underwhelmed. It’s incredibly pricey and the fish quality isn’t that fresh to me.

We oreded two orders of the 7 pieces nigiri + California roll which is $26, along with several a la carte sushi piece options which comes with 2 pieces. The total was almost $90 and it left us still hungry.

Normally, I enjoy tuna but one of the pieces tasted so gross to me I questioned its freshness. Ambience is ok, the tables feel too close together."

Valerie Wan

"OMG!! It’s my birthday today so I decided to visit here after suuuper long time! The food was still amazing and they even gave me a surprise dessert for my birthday. Totally worth the price! I had such a special time with my hubby. Plus our server explained each of the Chef’s Special Nigiri one by one she was super professional and so nice! Thank you!"

Best Sushi Restaurants in San Diego

You normally wouldn’t expect to find amazing sushi in a strip mall tucked between car dealerships and a 7-Eleven, but that’s what makes Sushi Ota a hidden gem. Despite the unspectacular location, it's usually packed, so unless you like hanging out in parking lots, make a reservation. You can order rolls if you want, but what they’re really known for is their spot-on, fresh sashimi and some of the most reliably delicious uni in town. How to book: Reservations can be made online.

Japanese Restaurants | San Diego

Sushi Ota, located on the outskirts of Pacific Beach on Mission Bay Drive and Bunker Hill Street, has been serving handcrafted sushi and seafood preparations for years. As word spread about the freshness of their fish and the quality of the food, Sushi Ota became one of the best places to satisfy a seafood craving. This neighborhood Japanese restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner, offering a great selection of sushi and seafood for both meals.

From the outside, Sushi Ota looks like a hole in the wall, but this beloved restaurant in a nondescript Pacific Beach strip mall serves what I consider the best sushi in San Diego. Founded by a Japanese chef, Master Ota (who recently passed the reins to his executive chef), Sushi Ota is laser-focused on the food. The fish is fresh and locally sourced, with uni taking a starring role.
