Vino's

Vino’s put Little Rock’s beer scene on the map and is considered a local stalwart. It may be a little grungy, but the hand-tossed, stone-baked, New York-style pizza will not disappoint, and the calzones are phenomenal.

Vino’s of the downtown Little Rock area is known for their homebrews and pizza – they are Arkansas’s first brewpub, after all. Vino’s offers a preservative-and-chemical-free brews, from an India IPA dubbed the Pinnacle IPA and the seasonal Quarterpaw Quarter Porter, brewed with a hint malt and chocolate, and borrows its name from a historic neighborhood in Little Rock. Little Rock natives can pop in for one of their brews, a slice of their almost-equally famed pizza and listen to live music on selected nights.

Twenty years after the transition from the building’s incarnation as the DMZ, Vino’s Brewpub still hosts great up-and-coming musical acts. But the real stars are on the menu – a half dozen fine brewed ales and stouts made right in the restaurant – and pizzas and calzones with a very distinctive flavor. My choice is always the veggie calzone – enough for two, packed with mozzarella and ricotta and vegetables and served with the almost smooth marinara that also makes the joint’s pies perfect flat creations.

Little Rock's first brewpub, located at 7th and Chester in downtown Little Rock, has been brewing their own beer since 1993, well before craft beer became an American powerhouse and certainly long before Arkansas joined the craft brew party. Vino's is a local favorite; everyone from politicians to musicians crosses paths at this joint, and the all-ages music venue in the back has seen everything from poetry slams to Green Day on stage. Like the restaurant itself, the beer here isn't flashy.

Slices are huge, so you might be able to fill up on just one, though hungrier folks might want two. A plain slice of cheese starts at $1.85 with additional toppings 50 cents after that. But my favorite is the Vino’s Special, a $3.90 slice topped with pepperoni, mushrooms, Italian sausage, onions, meatballs, green peppers, green and black olives, and extra cheese.

Vino's has a great independent rocker type atmosphere topped off with fresh pizza (some say the calzones are the best in Arkansas) and freshly brewed beer. They sometimes have live music on other nights, but almost always have music Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. It gets loud and crowded in Vino's but that's part of what makes it great (capacity is about 300).

As far as the menu goes, there are so many incredible pizzas on the menu.

Some people enjoy Vino’s pizza by-the-slice because it gets a little crispier in the oven, but I am still a fan of ordering an entire pie, typically one covered in Italian sausage or the supreme. The dough can be a little inconsistent, sometimes leaning towards a thicker texture, but there is no denying that Vino’s still churns out some of the best pie in town.

The lunch slices at Vino’s are so big they’re served in a 10-inch pizza box. And the lunch special at Vino’s is hard to beat. You can order a one-topping slice (I opted for a cheese slice because I’d just watched “Home Alone” and Kevin’s right, cheese pizza is lovely), a dinner salad and a drink for $8.27 with tax included.

It's a pizza joint that also claims the distinction of being the city's "Original Brewpub." If you're looking for an adventurous, casual experience, Vino's is the bar for you. Try their "beer sampler" platter to spark up some sparkling first date conversation. Yelp reviewers give the funky brewpub a 4 out of 5 star rating.

Vino’s is the perfect destination if you’re looking for something more than a simple meal. Vino’s also functions as a brewery, offering freshly brewed beer completely free of chemicals and preservatives to emphasize flavor and quality. Their handcrafted ales are one of a kind, and that’s just the beginning.

Vino’s is one of the original local New York Pizza and Breweries in Little Rock. Sip on a local brew while enjoying a local band in their back room. Every pizza usually has a by-the-slice option during the day, including classic creations like the Muffuletta, complete with ham, pepperoni, and olive mix.

Vino’s is old and musty, but damn if it doesn’t have a ton of character. The house-made brew ain’t too shabby and neither is the pizza. In short, Vino’s isn’t an upscale, destination dining spot, but it is a fixture of Little Rock with a ton of history behind it.

You can order a veggie pizza from a number of places in Little Rock, but we think that Vino’s has a pretty solid option – it’s probably that beer-batter crust. Take it a step further and order it in calzone form – you can thank us later.

Local breweries abound in downtown and Argenta — there’s Diamond Bear, Lost Forty, Stone’s Throw and Flyway, to name a few — but if you’re in the mood for a dive, opt for Vino’s where you’ll catch some live music with your in-house brew.

Vino’s, a longtime favorite among locals, won’t win many style points, but the place does have a certain charm and it still churns out some pretty darn good pizza and beer. The cheese calzone isn’t too shabby, either.

Sure, maybe Vino’s best years are far behind it, but there’s something I still love about that irresistible smell of beer, pizza, and yeasty hops.
