Reviews Summary

Gusto Bread is celebrated for its innovative approach to baking, blending traditional Mexican flavors with heirloom grains. Diners rave about the unique pastries and breads, particularly the Nixtamal Queen and savory options. While the baked goods receive widespread acclaim, some reviews mention the coffee as being less impressive. The friendly and knowledgeable staff contribute to a positive overall experience, though long lines can be a common occurrence.

"We didn’t intend on coming here, but it was an opportunity to try Gusto since there was barely any line on the Saturday morning.

We dropped in and grabbed a few bites. Overall, the jamon pastry was really good. The surprising Dijon mustard hit very well and the starch of the bread gives a nice balance to it. My favorite of them all.

The cheddar jalapeño bread was delicious as well. Very fluffy and has a lot of flavor. If you are savory lover, you should get this one.

The Mole empanada was also great. They pack in a lot in that pastry.

Very grateful to have the chance to try Gusto. I was lucky that there wasn’t any line but now I see why there is a long line each time."

"If your in Long Beach this is a nice bakery with some good quick bites. The food was good, the pastries we're not too sweet which was nice. Coffee was okay but the atmosphere was nice as was the staff. Parking is a bit crowded in the area so you might have to walk over."

Saxon Cummins

"I‘m German so I’m very picky with the type of bread I like (and let’s be honest, most „bread“ sold in the US is a disgrace to the original product). I came to Gusto today for the first time and purchased a great looking sourdough loaf. The employee was very knowledgeable and explained all the different type of breads they had available. It was a busy day but he took his time with us. When I cut the bread later at home, I almost teared up. This tastes so close to home and brought back a taste I haven’t experienced for the 5 years I’m living overseas. This is craftsmanship, THANK YOU - your work is highly appreciated and I’m proud to live in a neighborhood with you guys. I will become a regular."

26 Best Bakeries in Los Angeles for Cakes, Cookies, Pies

Best for: Bread loaves, pan dulce, cookiesDown in Long Beach, Arturo Enciso’s artisanal panaderia integrates heirloom grains into the art of traditional Mexican pastry-making. Alongside rustic loaves studded with seeds, Gusto Bread serves an array of new-school pan dulce, including conchas, orejas and nixtamal queens—Gusto Bread’s masa-based twist on French kouign-amann. The pan de maiz, made with freshly milled heirloom corn and wildflower honey, will make you rethink your love of American-style cornbread, and we think the guava-marmalade-stuffed pastelitos is the ideal way to start a weekend morning.

The dishes that define the Long Beach food scene

Here’s how James Tir described Gusto’s Nixtamal Queen: “Whether Gusto Bread, the lauded Indigenous-meets-European panadería, is dough master Arturo Enciso’s magnum opus remains to be seen—however, it’s undoubtedly one of the best bakeries in the Southern California region. The bakery churns out conchas, choribuns, pastelitos, and more, often selling out by midday. “My go-to item is their nixtamal queen which smashes the concept of a kouign-amann together with house made nixtamal creating a wholly new pastry.

The pan de muerto at Gusto in Long Beach is a three-day process. The dough is first made, then fermented with a sourdough culture made from Valle de Guadalupe grape yeast, and finally baked before being dusted with a crunchy sugar mixture made from vanilla beans and burnt corn husks. To add to its true artisan allure, the egg yolk-enriched dough is made from local fresh eggs sourced from the La Bahn ranch egg stand at the Tuesday Torrance Farmers Market.

A child waiting in line on a recent Sunday at Gusto wailed to his dad, “Why does this place have to be so popular?!. ” Such is the demand for breads and pastries from the Long Beach bakery that once operated inside Arturo Enciso and Ana Belén Salatino’s living room.
