The concept is headed up by some pretty popular names in the Long Beach community, including Luis and Brenda Navarro (who are well known Long Beach natives and restaurateurs with their popular concepts Lola’s Mexican Cuisine and The Social List), as well as Jim Leatherman and Josh Johnson of Long Beach menswear brand, Port LBC, and Simon Haxton who is the distiller and is a rocket scientist by trade. Distiller Simon Haxton says, ” Long Beach is where we all live, so it is a point of pride we bring the first distillery here. It’s also a thirsty town with a long track record of supporting local businesses.

Katherine Humphus of Bo-beau Kitchen + Roof Tap, Janine Falvo of the SIP Lounge at The Renaissance Hotel, Rachael Beeman of The Pike Bar & Grill, Aubrey Neuman of The Social List and Natalie Gutenkauf of The Factory Gastrobar are five women who are making their names known in the Long Beach culinary scene and beyond. I was given the chance to interview the five of them, to find out why they cook, how they run a kitchen, how they stay sane and to find out what it’s like to be a hard working woman in an industry that used to heavily favor men (and more often than not, still does).

To give you an idea of how they do things, here are some mottos they live by: “Food is communal; it’s meant to be enjoyed and shared”, “The best food is made from simple, high quality ingredients and prepared with love”, and “We at The Social List strive to bring the best quality food to Long Beach. The sausages are handmade, the bread is fresh baked, and the produce is locally sourced”. If that does not entice you, they have another trick up their sleeve.

Whenever my husband and I want to sneak away without the kids, we head down to 4th Street in Long Beach to grab a drink at The Social List. Their whiskey menu is top notch and their happy hour is always worth looking in on. The restaurant offers loads of discounts on food off of their starter menu ($8-$12), plus a $5 Beer of the Day and $5 House Red and White Wine, plus $5 Boiler Makers, $10 Old Fashioned and $8 Mule On Tap.

If you feel like continuing your culinary adventure, they have a great European-inspired tapas place. The Social List is a bright and airy spot on 4th Street/Retro Row, not too far away from Lola's, its popular sister location from the same owners who whip up Mexican food. This is the type of place where you can get sharable items like escargot, scotch eggs, and steamy clams in a bacon-and-white-wine sauce.
