DID YOU KNOW, there is more to Mexican cuisine than just tacos and burritos!? Last time we were in LA, we wanted our visiting Asian friends to try some burritos. Since I'm not too familiar with LA, we Googled "Mexican Food" on maps, and ended up at the Guelaguetza Restaurant. Turns out, this place doesn't serve the typical burritos or tacos, but rather, delicious Oaxacan cuisine from Southern Me...

Reviews Summary

Guelaguetza is celebrated for its authentic Oaxacan cuisine, particularly its renowned moles and tlayudas, offering a transportive culinary experience. The vibrant atmosphere, often enhanced by live music, contributes to its appeal. While some note that service can be stretched thin, the friendly staff and the unique flavors make it a highly recommended destination for a taste of Mexico.

"Craving a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico without the plane ticket? Get your ass to La Guelaguetza — stat. This place doesn’t just serve food, it transports you. One bite of their legendary tlayudas or rich, complex moles and you’ll forget you’re still in LA. From fresh, hand-pressed tortillas to flame-grilled meats that hit just right, it’s a full-on Oaxacan feast that might just require someone to roll you home. Seriously — food coma incoming (and worth it)."

"We decided to throw a surprise birthday dinner for our dear friend at Guelaguetza, and from the moment we arrived, the experience was absolutely beautiful.

Valet parking welcomed us with a big smile and warm energy, instantly setting the tone for the night. At the front door, Violetta greeted us with genuine joy and walked us to our table while sharing a little bit of the rich history behind the restaurant—which made us feel even more connected to the space.

Our server, Jose, was phenomenal. He patiently explained the ingredients in each dish, highlighted house specialties, and made sure every question was answered with care. His passion for the food and the culture behind it truly elevated our meal.

To top it all off, they surprised our friend with a tres leches birthday cake, which made the moment unforgettable. It was the perfect touch of sweetness and celebration.

Thank you to the entire Guelaguetza team for making this birthday dinner so special. We’ll definitely be back!"

KoreatownThe children of Fernando Lopez and Maria Monterrubio, the retired husband-and-wife duo who opened Guelaguetza in 1994, after immigrating from their native Oaxaca, keep this iconic establishment’s legacy alive by staying true to authentic Oaxacan ingredients and time-tested family recipes. The vibrant colors, sounds, and scents of Oaxaca come to life upon walking into Guelaguetza. On any given night, banda musicians will be strumming their instruments while you sip on lesser-known mezcals from the region alongside a mixed bag of Angelenos, including locals longing for an authentic taste of their mother country. From the outside, you might mistake Guelaguetza, which retrofitted a freestanding Chinese pagoda structure into a Oaxacan institution, for any number of Gringo-style Mexican restaurants on charmless boulevards serving obscenely large portions of nachos/enchiladas/burritos rendered interchangeable blanketed under molten cheddar.
