The Vierling Restaurant & Marquette Harbor Brewery

The Vierling, one of Michigan’s oldest brewpubs and arguably Marquette’s most-charming restaurant, offers a taste of fine dining without pretension. You can’t go wrong with any of the menu items involving whitefish (be it smoked, broiled or folded into a hearty chowder), but don’t miss the beer-centric Whitefish Bites. Tender pieces of fresh-off-the-lake whitefish are dipped in homemade beer batter, then deep-fried until golden and crisp to create these comforting eats.

Tuck into an herb-infused cocktail and array of German-fused comfort fare, including the most flavorful and authentic wienerschnitzel on this side of the Atlantic at The Steinhaus; enormous, farm-fresh sandwiches at Café Bodega; melt-in-your-mouth croissants at Huron Mountain Bakery and whitefish dishes at the Vierling Restaurant meticulously prepared from ingredients swimming in the lake just hours prior.

There’s little that’s ritzy about the Vierling’s menu—think craft beer, fried fish, and whitefish chowder—but the ambience is all 19th-century red brick, greenery, and stained glass. Even if you don’t have time to stick around, take that Blueberry Wheat (a local delicacy) to go and stroll within the city’s Social District, drink in hand.

The Vierling Restaurant & Marquette Harbor Brewery, Marquette (119 S. Front St.) – The Vierling Restaurant is located in the heart of downtown Marquette (corner of Front and Main streets), in a building that is more than 100 years old. The storied history of this building includes serving alcohol both before and after prohibition, and in 1995 becoming one of the state’s first licensed brewpubs. We were happy to find 10 beers on tap in a variety of styles, with our favorite being the El Dorado Imperial IPA. The food here is fantastic, with options ranging from seafood and pasta to burgers and chicken or pork dinners.

For over 100 years, The Vierling has been a talking point in Marquette. After just a few decades of being open, the saloon closed its doors once Prohibition took hold, but in 1985 the building was restored as the Historic Vierling Saloon and Sample Room. Sit on the patio or towards the back of the restaurant for a gorgeous overlook of Lake Superior while enjoying a cheeseboard or some locally caught whitefish and drinking their very own beer they brew right on site.

The Vierling Restaurant is one of the most recognized and oldest restaurants in Marquette, and it didn’t always have a brewery. Marquette Harbor Brewery opened in 1995 with a 5-BBL microbrewing system, establishing one of the first brewpubs in Michigan. It makes the finest small-batch lagers and ales, which you can order alongside the restaurant’s fish, homemade soups, and desserts.

The Vierling Restaurant has a long-standing history with the community of Marquette. Martin Vierling established himself as a retail businessman selling fine liquors to the hard-working men of the mining and iron ore industry. After a couple of failed locations, he moved his establishment one final time to the current spot on the corner of Front and Main.

After a long hiatus, it was reopened in 1985 as the Vierling Restaurant. Although it has been modernized and is now one of the most well-known pubs and restaurants in the city, the building still contains many of the original features. Today it offers a mix of casual and high-end food, such as steaks, seafood, pasta, salads, and sandwiches.

It started out as a saloon and was in operation until 1917 when prohibition closed it down. It was once again opened in 1985 by Kristi and Terry Doyle and was renovated into a cafe but they made sure to keep the historic details. They still serve lunch and dinner, all fresh and homemade, with a well-stocked wine cellar.

Marquette is one of the U.P.’s worst-kept secrets, and we’re okay with that. Small shops and bigger commercial businesses alike draw visitors and locals to the thriving downtown. The Vierling, Marquette’s oldest brewery, uses brewing equipment imported from Hungary to handcraft some of the Upper Peninsula’s finest ales.

Eating whitefish is an absolute must when in Marquette and why not get the freshest fish in town with a cold beer?. The Vierling is the oldest brewery in town and has an excellent view of Lake Superior’s harbor. Kick back with a beer and a big plate of whitefish—my go-to is the blueberry wheat, especially in the summer.

This true fixture of the city of Marquette is known as much for its excellent food and cool, historic atmosphere as it is for is beer. It’s just two blocks away from the equally historic Landmark Inn, but it features its own old-world touches like an antique oak bar; it boasts a view of Marquette's lower harbor too.

The Vierling is right across from Lower Harbor, so you can have lunch with a view!. They are known for their whitefish, which is usually fresh caught right from Lake Superior, and Blueberry Wheat beer. The restaurant also acts as a local museum, filled with maps, photos, and mementos from Marquette's past.

Come for the view, stay for the food in this historic landmark spot. Fresh Lake Superior Whitefish is a specialty. Have it your way in bites, cajun style, piccata, chowder, fish fry or one of their house specials topped with shrimp, onions and green peppers in garlic butter sauce over parmesan linguine.

The Vierling Restaurant & Marquette Harbor Brewery overlooks Marquette's harbor. The fish and chips I ordered were excellent, but the beer was the highlight. I ordered the beer sampler that includes small glasses of all ten beers on tap.

This is another one of those Marquette MI restaurants that everyone will have heard of. It’s one of those staples and also offers its own house-made beer. The menu is diverse and you will find something to suit most people here.

The Vierling offers a bit of everything ranging from fresh fish, American fare, and pizza. They also offer their own house-made beer that is some of my favorite in Marquette. Try the Blueberry if you’re feeling adventurous!

EAT: The Vierling is an old-time bar, housed in a 132-year-old building. It’s the premier white fish restaurant in Marquette and around the Upper Peninsula. They make their own beer there, and it’s very, very charming.
