Reviews Summary

Central BBQ is a highly-regarded Memphis barbecue institution, celebrated for its flavorful dry rub ribs and inventive BBQ nachos. While many praise the tender meats, popular desserts like banana pudding, and friendly service, some diners have encountered dry meats and less-than-stellar sides. The lively atmosphere and convenient location near the Civil Rights Museum add to its appeal, making it a worthwhile stop for barbecue enthusiasts.

"I had just finished visiting the Pyramid of Sea Pro Bass in Memphis and had to walk back to my hotel, but I didn't feel like walking, so I called an Uber. Good choice, the very nice driver told me about this super BBQ restaurant in Memphis very close to my hotel.
It was a big surprise for me because when I travel I always choose restaurants and meticulously plan all the places to eat and to my surprise I did not know this restaurant.
Of course I ordered the Memphis-style pork ribs and my wife the pulled pork sandwich, but first we had a small basket of nachos with cheddar, jalapeno and pulled pork. The food was delicious, well cooked and generously seasoned. The restaurant was cozy, the staff friendly, and even the owner was very friendly - he was thrilled that I had come from Italy to eat at his restaurant."

doncariello

"Coming from Texas this wasnt bad bbq! The bbq was pretty good, their bbq sauce was awesome- we put that thang on everything. Definitely worth a try. We had the sampler appetizer each as our meal and that was a great choice, had a little bit of everthing and very filling. Really enjoyed the chicken slider and pulled pork nachos. Staff was very kind with that sweet southern charm. Took the food to go so I can’t really say too much about the ambiance but looked really laid back and casual. Cute rustic decor. Parking was easy with the parking lot in the back"

Daniela Hinojosa

"Very conveniently located adjacent to the Civil Rights Museum.
I had high hopes, but unfortunately, the food let me down. I’ve ate 4-5 other barbecue places while in Memphis, and this is by far my least favorite. I only ate half my pork, and that’s usually my favorite part.

The service seemed fine.
The atmosphere was good.

I would not return here"

Grilling and Summer Recipes: BBQ, Sides, Desserts, How-tos

A relative newbie, open since 2002 and popular with local college students, Central has made its mark in a city filled with great barbecue options. But there are options aplenty at this casual eatery — from the popular slow-smoked loin back (read: meaty!) ribs to the BBQ nachos topped with pulled pork to the house-made fresh fried pork rinds. Locals know to order the pork plate with extra “bark” (the dark, smoky crust) and always leave with a brown bag of the thick-cut potato chips, which are sprinkled with Central’s special seasoning and served with blue cheese.

Family Friendly: Restaurants in Memphis

Central is one of our family's favorites, thanks to the huge patio that's open during fine weather (often with a band tucked into the corner), the homemade potato chips with bleu cheese dressing (which our table of six agreed recently were the work of the devil, they're so delicious), or maybe it's just the atmosphere - fun and funky, with that aroma of smoking meat wafting from the pit. The magic numbers for Central are 250 (as in degrees) and 14 (the number of hours meat is cooked). The pork is always tender, the ribs have just the right balance of crust on top and moisture inside.

A surging chain in recent years, Central BBQ has several locations around the Memphis area and makes a very convincing argument for having the best BBQ nachos in town. Pro-tip: you can ask to replace the tortilla chips with french fries, making a signature dish that might not technically be nachos, but sure is damn delicious. Central is also a great place to get acquainted with Memphis brews: the two best and most ubiquitous are “Wiseacre Tiny Bomb” and “Ghost River Gold.” The former is an American pilsner, and the latter a golden ale.
